Page 1 of Rear surrounds when listening position is against the wall.

Hi

Am I correct in thinking that, when the listening position is up against the rear wall, the best set up for rear surrounds is higher up but pointed down at the listener(s)?

Most configs I've seen suggest head(ish) height pointed inwards towards the listening position.

But what if that isn't possible because of the fact that the settee is up against the rear wall?
Anyone that isn't dead centre on the settee will be getting a constant earful of whizzing bullets or echoey footsteps.

Thanks, both.  I may just get away with that...I shall give it a try.

All Googling does is provide conflicting opinions :-)  So unless anyone has overcome this issue with a 5.1 setup...

Try fixing them up temporary and see if you like it, and if not move them till your happy.

I always configure for the optimal listening position. My sofa is against the wall at the opposite end of the room and I have my rears pointed inwards at head height (well, just above). My amp does have Audyssey, which is supposed to help with non-centred seating positions, but I would always go with what sounds best in the most frequently used position rather than catering for everyone. Then again, I'm the only person in my house who really cares about surround sound.

As others have said, if you can at all do it, then all speakers should be at ear height. However, in the past with my rears, I've actually had them high up facing down.

Rear sounds should ideally be more spacious, which is why bi-polar speakers are a great choice, especially if the speakers are quite close to the listening position.

Before I got bi-polars, I had mounted my speakers much higher than ear height, facing down, which was a good compromise.
