Page 1 of PS2 Home Cinema Advice
Hardware Forum
Guys,
I have a PS2 which I currently use to play my DVD`s, who can offer me advice on building my home cinema???
Should I buy an amp speaker bundle?
Should I buy a new DVD player with a 5.1 speaker package?
Any advice would prove usefull as I am unsure of what would be the best option.
Cheers
Mark
I can only speak from experience, so if you want a technical reply then please ignore the following. .....
If like myself you don`t own the latest all singing all dancing television then chances are laying out money for a better quality DVD player will yield little or no discernable picture quality improvements.
So with that said, An AV-AMP and speaker setup would be the way to go. With the PS2 only having a digital output the logical route would be to obtain an AV-AMP with the ability to handle the DTS sound format.
The Sony STR-DE475 & Satellite speaker setup I have found to be the ideal Low Cost solution. I payed £349.99 in Nov 01 and have used it extensively since then.
I have hooked up my TV, PS2, Video, Mini Disk, Satellite Box and HI-FI to it and found it more than capable of handling all of them and still there are more inputs available, by now there is probably a newer version of the same system available, but I can thoroughly recommend the STR-DE475.
One other thing to look out for is the dreaded GREEN SCREEN when you connect your PS2 with an RGB compatible Scart Cable/Socket. You must however connect it to obtain the best quality images from your PS2. But don`t worry there is a way around the problem. Datel AR2 v2 is what I am using but I know there are other products out there. What this does (if you don`t already know) is 1. get rid of the GREEN SCREEN of DEATH (as its fondly called) and 2. enable you to watch any region DVD even the R.C.E ones (RCE the new protection system certain companies are employing). On top of all that there is a host of PS2 game cheats included, you can even download codes from the net so it is never out of date.
I hope you find this (longer than expected) of some use.
And good luck.

Cheers for the advice, gonna go & have a good look round but I am swaying towards an all in one package at the moment. This is b`coz I will be getting a new widescreen in the near future so perhaps a better quality DVD player will be the way to go.
Cheers.
