Are there any decent all-in-one DVD Receivers *without* speakers?
Space restrictions mean I`m having to look seriously at an all-in-one DVD/receiver (aka "home cinema"! unit) but most of the widely publicised units (e.g Sony DAV-S800 etc) come with speakers which I have no need for - I already have a decent 5-speaker Mission set. Can anyone recommend an all-in-one which *doesn`t* come with speakers? I`ve heard of an Onkyo unit, and I`ve just seen the Linn Classik but that`ll be out of my price range, sadly...

Hi Chris
Home Cinema Boxs like you rightly point out mainy come complete with speakers. The best one without speakers ive come across which has received reasonable reviews is the DENON ADV-700 DVD retailed at £750 but available for £590.
It offer DPL2, CDRW playback and resonable power bearing in mind its an all in one box.
Hope this helps

would it not be better to buy the Sony or whatever & sell the speakers that come with it, or put them in the loft until you come to sell it on.

The Denon and the Onkyo are your two best options out there.
The Linn is sadley floored in my view as it will not allow "suround" from any external source. Only 2 chanel play back? If I was spending 2K on a all in one box I would want it to do it all.
All the best,
Andrew.

"The Linn ... will not allow "surround" from any external source"? Does that mean I couldn`t plug my satellite box into it and get surround?

Correctamondo Chris. Only stereo.
All the best,
Andrew.

Just to confirm - and I have just emailed them to complain, the Linn Classik Movie System does not support surround sound from any Aux source.
Therefore my Xbox and Sky can only have stereo sound through this.
In their defence, there is a hell of a lot inside this small box (one of Linn`s designers gave me a guided tour of the inside of it) and the space saving over my previous amp / dvd / cd is huge.
The sound and picture quality is truly stunning.
There will be a newer version released soon that will add RGB to its capabilities but still no digital inputs.
I was not too chuffed about this point but purely on the sound and picture quality, I would not return to my previous system, instead I just long to upgrade to their AV51 series.
