NTSC / PAL conversion query

Wad (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 4th May 2002, 10:02

I`ve noticed when playing R1 disks that the top and bottom of the display are slightly cropped. I`ve also discovered the same problem on my Dreamcast and Gamecube when playing games in 60Hz mode.

Can anyone shed any light on this ?

I have a Wharfedale 750, and a Phillips 28PW6305. I used to have an old square screened Tosh TV, can`t remember noticing this then.

Cheers

Wad.

are they cropped or are they actually going off the top and bottom of the screen? I had a prob with all my 60hz consoles doing this on a new panasonic I got recently but a friend found the engineer codes off the net to change the display and then it was solved.

I`m pretty sure they are just stretched off the top and the bottom, rather than cropped. Is it something to do with my TV then ?

Cheers

Yep. It`s your TV. You need to get to the controls that change stuff like vertical and horizontal hold. Many years ago there were controls for this actually on the tv. Assuming this isn`t the case with your TV - and assuming your TV is relatively new - then hopefully there should be hidden enginner screens you can get access to that will allow you to change the settings. Search around on the net or get in touch with the company who makes the TV and tell them the problem. Ask them how you get access to the codes. It`s all very well getting an engineer out to do it (assuming the TV is in warranty so you don`t have to pay) but then you`ll have to be exactly happy with how they leave it. It`s best to be able to do it yourself. If you`re connecting many different consoles to your TV via scart then not all of them are going to be alligned the same. Just find the codes - centre the picture and then squash it if need be - or whatever you have to do; and you`ll be fine. I had exactly the same problem with my new TV I just got. Friend found the codes just by searching on Google (he had the same sort of problems as me and had bought the same manufacturer`s TV!). Good luck!
