DTS/5.1 Amplifier

Choagy (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 7th May 2002, 12:41

Sorry to ask the same question again but having spent the last few weeks at either funerals, cremations and nursing homes ,Christ Talk About Lucky White Heather :-) , I`ve lost track off any recommendations some more enlightened individuals may have given. I seem to be getting more and more confused when I visit sites like Sony etc, and view the spec of some of their home theatre kits. I can probably spend up to £350 and for that I would hopefully get a DTS/5.1 amplifier with tuner. My DVD has DTS and 5.1 decoders built in. Am I being realistic in expecting this for the price . If I can expect to get what I fancy for the price do any of you have tips on what one would be best!. All the best prices seem to be on-line so any tips on retailers would be greatly appreciated . Also if I get one is it better to connect Sky Digital through the amp along with the DVD or would it be better to play the video through the amp. The television we have only has two scart sockets so would this present any problems.
Cheers Buds :-)

Let me confirm this - you are looking for just the amp/receiver - not speakers as well? If so, then £350 will get you something lovely - I`d say have a look out for the new Yamaha RXV630 - reviews are a bit thin on the ground, but our very own Westy`s heard it and says it`s a corker!

you can`t do anybetter than the Sony HTK215 system. it looks far better than any other systems , is more than loud enough and the quality is second to none
It allows you to do all the things you mentioned.
I brought it 2 weeks ago after a hell of a lot of research and i am totally totally impressed.
It costs £350 from Currys etc or £270 (including delivery) from unbeatable.co.uk

Sorry I should have posted that I would be looking for a system that includes speakers so I`m not sure if £350 would cover these as well. I`m just off to check out www.unbeatable.co.uk.

I would try

http://www.richersounds.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?load=frame

as they do great deals on receivers and speaker packages........don`t know if any around the £350 mark but prob better deals to be had than buying from curry`s etc.

in fact have seen this SONY one on richersounds site - don`t know anything about it but ...... Sony DAVS300 Multi-Region (Dolby Digital DVD speaker Package) - £349.99 - says you save £200 - plus i think it`s a decent player - out of stock but it will give you an idea of prices etc.

It is also worth considering the Videologic Digitheatre DTS, which is available for about £200, if you want the Black one, the Silver one is still about £350. It has DD, DTS and DPL and 2 other DSP`s

Apologies to the HTK-215 owners, but I`m afraid the Sony doesn`t match sonically to the Videologic, it is prettier though.

The Yamaha VS10 is also worth a listen.

Hope this helps.
