Just got myself a portable minidisc recorder today and now I realise I dont have an optical output on either my DVD or Amp. The manual mentions using an analogue to optical cable instead, does anyone know where I can get one for a reasonable price?
I don`t think there is such a thing, but you will only get as good as the weakest link, meaning the analogue connection. The best thig would be a normal analogue lead. I have had mini discs for about 5 years & my amp has digital out so I can do it eather way & to be truthfull there`s not a great deal in it.

Not optical on DVD player or amp?
Does that include your CD player?
My cheap Aiwa hi-fi has a digital output.
What about your computer? You could always get a new sound card with digital out?
RE: Minidisc analogue to optical cable.
Coax on my DVD, no output on my amp, dont have a CD player no room and use my PC if I need to. Kind of a waste to buy a new soundcard for digital out just for this. The manual states that they DO make this cable, I just want to know if anyone knows were I can get one.
NO big worries, my house mate had optical on his minisystem so I`ll use that until I change my DVD.

Maplin.co.uk do a coax digital to optical convertor for £19-99 cat number QN17T, if that`s the sort of thing you`re after.

Hey thanks. That will do the job. What I was searching for was a Sony part that converts analogue to a digital optical signal. There is a part number in the manual but I imagine that this will be a lot cheaper anyway. Also keeps it digital all the way through the system.

I really can`t see the point of wasting money on the converter as your sound quality won`t improve over the original analogue, unless your mini disc only takes optical. Mine takes both.
RE: Minidisc analogue to optical cable.
Yep, mine only takes optical. Also cant use the MDLP at the moment as my friends recorder doesnt support it and doesnt have an optical output either. *sigh*. I have some albums which wont fit on one disc. Tell me about the money, the headphones are horrible in ear things so I need to buy some replacements too.

What make & model mini disc player do you have. I had mine stolen recently so I have to get another. I find Richer sound the cheapest for discs. Sometimes they have an offer in `What Hi Fi` with a voucher for discs. They also give you a disc or tape free if you print a voucher off their website, maybe the offer is in the mag in their shops. My mini disc recorder had the optical & analogue input in the same slot. Hope this helps.
RE: Minidisc analogue to optical cable.
MDLP really isnt all that amazing in my opinion......it sounds `ok` on the LP2 mode, but it gets really tinny on LP4.....so I pretty much ignore the whole system, its just a gimmick......
I used to make recordings using the optical out on my DVD player to my portable Sony (MZR-700?) but then I invested in a full size MD player, and it is much much much better for recording things and sounds fantastic playing.
Another option for you might be to get a deck with a coaxial digital input, and make recordings using that that you could play on your portable. The recordings would also sound a lot better on top of that.
Just a thought.
