Don`t have I-tunes - how can I download songs for my i-pod shuffle

Hi - I have a PC with Windows 98. I-tunes only works on Windows 2000 or XP. anyone know how i can download songs on to my i-pod shuffle ? Appararently anapod explorer works well. Can I save my CDs onto my computers hard drive, and then download onto my shuffle ?
(Don`t relly want to fork out £80 for Windows XP)

I tried using Windows Media Player to download onto daughters iPod but to no avail :(
Had to use itunes to get anything on it >:(

sell it and get a `flash drive` type of player ie one you plug into your cpu via usb, and it just shows up as another drive. drag n drop rm/mp3/wma/wav etc files-- done!!!

ive got a sony minidisc player i never use for that same reason-- you have to use their (f***ing AWFUL) software to import trax. same with ipods.
