Page 1 of What gig did you just go to?
Stickied in Music Forum
Kind of like the what music are you listening to thread, but for gigs...
Last night I saw The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park, and no I wasn't there (or alive) when they last did it.
Great set, good performance, Keith Richards looks like he's about to fall down dead at times, but still manages to play the guitar as good as always.
On before them were The Temper Trap who seemed pretty good, and The Vaccines which were a disappointment, not a poor performance just found them very uninteresting.
One frustrating thing was how a side stage kept over-running and crashing with the main act. And the queues for the food were ridiculous!

We travelled down to see Green Day at the Emirates last month which was excellent, they always are though. All Time Low and The Killers opened for them and were both great too.
My wife is a huge Bon Jovi fan and she was gutted we couldn't get tickets to see them at the Stadium of Light which is literally 20 minutes down the road from us. Then on the morning of the gig (2 weeks ago) I got an email from Showfilmfirst.com asking how many complimentary tickets I wanted, which was an absolutely amazing surprise. By the time I picked the tickets up and got a sitter for the kids, we got there and had missed The Feeling and half of The Futureheads set. A small concession for what TOH is calling her favourite day of the year so far.

Bit of a cheat, but did Glastonbury last week, so will include from there
The Rolling Stones- Were absolutely awesome. Have seen on forums about people who watched tv not too impressed, but then everyone who was actually there haven`t heard anyone say anything but unbelievable.
Watching the footage, they did start ,mid-gig and obviously being there and crowd atmosphere is a big part, so can kind of see the view from being armchair viewer.
Chic with Nile Rodgers- Again absolutely superb, we just danced and sang for 1hr 30mins with hit after hit, as they do all songs that Nile Ridgers has been involved with so Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, INXS, Madonna, Bowie etc etc
Strongly suggest catching if you can, as they were on tour pre-Glastonbury. Have to admit my Chic knowledge was non-existing outside Le Freak, but after they were announced and I saw the online comments I thought that sounds like will be awesome, so managed to convince my mates as said "if" Daft Punk were making surprise appearance that would be one of the two places (the other being Phoenix and they didn`t show up). They did Get Lucky on the PA after the set thought so the crowd just sang it back, but was just really really feel good factor.
Won`t bore with everyone I saw, but those were the 2 stand out acts by a mile.

Have seen on forums about people who watched tv not too impressedMy guess there is that it`s completely down to the Stones` attitude to the whole `Glastonbury experience`. Only `allowing` an hour of the 2hr+ set to be broadcast was totally not in keeping with the Glastonbury philosophy at all. It`s not something I`ve ever heard of before and really don`t understand their reasoning. Can`t imagine any other band playing such a festival and negotiating right until the end just how much of the show could be broadcast.
Charlie is a Parker from Thunderbirds double now.
I did enjoy the little that was shown.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

at a guess so they can release a CD/DVD/Blu Ray of the whole show, without ppl already having it from TV/download.

I`m sure it is to do with money grabbing.

How can anyone accuse the Stones of money grabbing?
It's not as if they have an average minimum ticket price for their concerts of over £100 or happily let their record company sue The Verve for using a sample from a very different cover version of one of their tracks.
Oh and...

Aye, not to mention the acoustics and sound being very different as it's mixed for live and at a much louder volume than in the home. Being there is always so different.

I'd love to see Nile Rodgers, his riffs are just so distinctive and original, very jealous!

As I say, completely against the `spirit` of Glasto. :(

Apparently a large part of the concern was that if the weather was bad, they didn`t want a bad performance being shown.
U2 had is p*ssing down and they struggled and got really bad reviews from it (I made a last minute change of heart and saw them that year and again, I thought it was pretty decent actually there).
Neil Young refused for any of his set to be shown. Springsteen only had about an hour shown aswell.
Leonard Cohen refused for any to be shown also, but he wasn`t obviously a headliner.
I don`t think there will a dvd of just the Glastonbury, as they were recording the Hyde Park gigs apparently, but may do what Springsteen did and have a dvd of the solo gigs, with some of the Glastonbury stuff as a bonus.
Rolling Stones apparently only did the gig for the Glastonbury standard headliner fee aswell, so can kind of understand not wanting to give away for free the whole set to everyone.
Think from their point of view though, having an edited set shown would have made more sense. That`s usually what happens so certain sections are missed out of what`s shown, but has the beginning and end and is cut together so you don`t actually realise you are missing anything when watching.

I actually have taken it from the iplayer and got video saved and done an MP3 version of the sets (in process of doing it for quite a few).
Have a fan bootleg for the whole Stones gig, but haven`t checked quality yet (had one for Neil Young, but too much crowd interferance for my liking).

Missing out the opening, missed 4 massive songs, that would have helped their record sales afterwards you would have thought (and also impressed the casual viewer more).

A quick google as know that 2 of the other biggest performances there of past decade or so were Paul Mccartney and David Bowie.
Mccartney`s tv coverage was 13 songs of the 33 played.
There`s only limited availability on the Bowie even on Youtube, so assume his set wasn`t shown in full either.
