viruses from Kazaa

Perhaps we shouldn`t be talking about this as it concerns Kazaa, which we shouldn`t be using to download programs, but the mods can decide whether this is a valid posting or not.

It`s actually a warning to anyone using the file-sharing network to download software, specifically either DVD Region-free or Stomp RecordNow. I thought I had downloaded both of these programs from Kazaa but one of them (I`m not sure which) was actually a virus renamed as a normal program.

What happened when I double-clicked on the .exe file was that the pc didn`t seem to be doing anything. In fact it was activating the system32.exe virus, which is a rather insidious one because it is named to look like a normal Windows program.

Anyway, it was a pain in the arse cleaning up after it but there doesn`t seem to be any real harm done to the data I have. I do, however, suspect that a keylogger program has been installed on my PC, because once when the system crashed while I was deleting and restarting I got a Windows popup saying that `MessageBouncer` was not responding. I haven`t been able to find out much about this but I think it is part of a spyware program called Golden Eye.

Any ideas? And yes, I do have a firewall and anti-virus software installed now but how do I find and uninstall this hidden program?

Someone else could probably confirm, but I think using Spybot search and destroy may help, do a search for the download, a link may even be in these forums somewhere.

I use kazaa and AVG (see previous posts) has picked up a few viruses (virii?) each time. And like you, one of them was for a multi-region program.

Thanks for your suggestions, folks. The IT guy from work says he will take a look at the machine for me if I bring it in tomorrow, so hopefully he will give it a thorough going over and let me know what firewall and virus-checking software is the best to use in preventing further problems.
