What kind of budget do you have? There is also a thread further down that specifies what parts to use.

Doogey

As sashenden posted it can come down to budget. However I reckon the following would be the minimum I would look for if it was for gaming.

Midi tower with 350Watt or higher PSU
Chaintech or Gigabyte Motherboard with the Nvidia chipset as opposed to Via
AMD XP 2600 or faster
Volcano 9 heat sink and fan
512 meg DDR memory
80 Gig hard drive
Radeon 9200 128 meg video card minimum
Soundblaster Live 5.1 Platinum or better
DVD+/- RW as in all probability you will want a recorder and if so better to get the DVD recorder which will also do CD recording .
56K modem
1.44 floppy
XP Home edition
I know that others will recommend other items but this is roughly what I would expect in a system

only thing i would change there is the gigabyte mobo for an asus, as i had loads of trouble with my gigabyte k7 triton-pro 2 took two weeks to set up properly as i had to keep waiting for new bios/driver updates just to make it work correctly ( & i`d like to say thanks to all on this forum that helped me out ) :D

if you post your budget we may be able to help more.

Also, if getting the ASUS Deluxe board with the nVidia APU there`s not a lot of point in getting a SB Live! card. Ther acceleration from the APU is greater than that of the Live!, and even the Audigy series (according to Tom`s Hardware).

However, I have the Audigy 2 in one of my systems as I wanted the EAX HD (APU only does EAX 2.0) and 6.1 support to go with my 6.1 speaker setup.
