In my previous posting i forgot to say it is windows 98 i am running not xp
SORRY!
the message i get iS
msinfo.exe
cannot find file "msinfo.exe(or one of its componets) make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libaries are available.
desktop:
could not load or run msinfo.exe specified in winini file. make sure the file exists on your computer or remove reference to it in the win.ini file

Sounds like you had a virus, that you`ve either cleaned manually or your AV software picked up on it. However, you`ve still got a reference to it in you`re win.ini file so your PC looks for it at start-up.

Go to Start - Run and type win.ini and hit enter. A file should open up in Notepad. You`ve probably got a line near the top that says Run= and then it will have msinfo.exe listed.

Ah just did a Google to see what the culprit is - it`s the CoolWebSearch that Jitendar posted about recently - G Man also mentioned it in the earlier thread (btw it might have been better sticking this response on to the end of that thread, rather than start a new one :) ). Got to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html and use the tool there to remove the references if you`re not comfortable doing it manually.

you can click start, run, type in sfc (system file checker) a box appears, start a search. any folders missing can be extracted from win 98 disc at the same time if any are missing. IT is very simple even if i haven`t explained it well.
