Deleting a second copy of Windows XP from my computer. How?

DavidLaw (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 26th September 2003, 08:26

Hi,

When I bought my computer I installed windows xp and there was an error which prevented me from making it work. I then installed windows xp again, it now works, but it means I`ve got two copies on the computer - and it asks me which I want to go into when the computer boots up.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of the defunct windows version without messing up the current one? There are also two copies of office on the computer as well, so I could do with getting rid of the useless second one. Thanks for any advice.

I did this for a friend, but can`t remember exactly how. It was pretty painless though, so don`t get too worried. Just Google "windows xp remove dual install" or something, I`ll post a link if I can find the tutorial I used.

Do you mean you actually have 2 directories called something like "C:Windows"??

If not - and your computer is functioning OK - then I`d suggest just editing the boot.ini file (It`s in the root of C: and is hidden)

You`ll see that file has the entries for your boot up selection
Set the timeout to be 0 - and you`ll never see the boot selection menu
