hard drive settings?

rob445 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 15th February 2004, 18:14

Hi there,
I`ve just got a new hard drive 40Gb thanks to the advice on this board, however, my computer seems to be limiting the drive to 8Gb. Is there any way I can utilize the drive fully. My system is old, running Windows 98.

Rob

I have only used Maxtor and they have some software called Maxblast that you will get with a retail boxed hard disk or can be downloaded from their website. If you go to the manufacturers web site they will normally have some software to overcome this.

makesure the bios on your motherboard can support 40 gb harddrives. Is it actually displaying it as a 40 gb harddrive in the bios setup ?

Are the jumpers set correctly?
Some arrangements can limit the HD size. It will say on the little picture on the HD if this is possible.

check your motherboard on the manufacturers web site and see if there are any bios updates listed which include increasing the size of harddrives that can be handled. Of course then theres the problem with reprogramming the bios, is it possible to do it safely (my bios has a bootstrap area thats never overwritten so if it fails i can still reprogram it again, others have dual copies to avoid this)
