Advise on upgrading SDRAM needed

tutchy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 28th February 2004, 17:54

I am looking to add extra Ram to my kids computer it is a 566 mhz celeron
The manual says I can upgrade using 68pin 100mhz Sdram however it says I can upgrade to 256mb if using 64bit memory or 512 if using 128bit however when I look online to buy they dont seem to mention anything about 64/128 bit.

please can someone advise me of where I can get the 128bit as I would like to upgrade to 512mb if possible.

Also I beleive I can buy 133mhz and it is backward compatable is that right.

Thanks for your help

yes it will, but generally, early celerons only had a FSB of 66Mhz, so although
you may have 133Mhz memory, it`s only being pushed at 66Mhz.

have`nt the foggiest what you`re on about with the 64bit/128bit memory :/

Not sure exactly but I would think you would be better of just going for 133 Mhz memory thus eliminating any potential problems .
You can get a 512 Meg stick of 133 Mhz for about £60 ( or a 256 Meg stick for about £30 ) so 512 Meg would probably be what I would go for.
If you do not have any spare slots on the motherboard for the 512 Meg just put the old memory in the drawer and use the 512 on its own and stick the old memory in the drawer.

133MHZ memory is backward compatible and as such you need not worry too much about it.

Unfortunately, that isn`t always true. Current PC100/133 SDRAM is 256MBit density, whereas many older motherboards have a limit of 64MBit or 128MBit density (this is probably the 64/128 that the manual was referring to).

If you put a 256MBit density stick into one of these boards, it will either refuse to work, or will work at a reduced capacity, e.g. a 512 megabyte stick will show up as 256 or 128 megabytes.

For guaranteed compatibility, you`re best off buying from Crucial using the "memory advisor" on their website. Basically, you select the make and model of motherboard, and they tell you which RAM will work in it.

you can also use a piece of software on the crucial site to help you find out what your motherboard might be here
Mind you its probably a bit too late to consider upgrading sdram as its now about twice the price of DDR as its heading off into the lower demand and higher price levels

This is true, had the same problem with my Celeron, wouldnt look at 256 ended up with 2x 128. Bloody pain!
