Page 1 of wireless networking question

need some advice pls

i currently have a pc at home (quite old - pII 350) and a cable modem with ntl (600M) i want to use my work laptop to connect to the internet via the broadband. My laptop will have a wireless card and the software to connect to my work network.

What do i need to buy - do i need to upgrade the modem to a wireless modem or do i need a wireless access point?

In either case, how does this affect the pc that is currently using the cable modem (connected via ethernet nic to ethernet port on modem)

You don`t replace the modem. What you need is a router with a wireless access point. The added advantage of this is you can get one that has a built in hardware firewall.

Something like the Netgear WGR614 or FWG114P.

Your current PC would connect to the router, and the router to the modem.

so i have to have a router? a wireless access point on its own wont work?

right so a i need a wireless router, plus a wireless access point,

connectivity
1. Cable modem to wireless router
2. Wireless router to wireless access point
3. PC to wireless access point
4. Laptop to wireless access point

have i got that right?

You do not need a seperate wireless access point, The wireless router has a built in access point. It is basically a normal router and a normal access point but all in the same box so cheaper (and easier to set up)

I went this way end of last year and it is great, can still get internet/network access in every room of the house, even in the garden :D

So it would be :
1. Modem one end plugged in to phone wall socket, other end plugged into the router.
2. A Cat5 (network cable) from the one of the sockets on the router to your pc`s network card.
3. A wireless card in your laptop (built in to many laptops now so check if you already have one) picks up wireless signal sent from router.

And that is it. You can also use a printer/floppy/cd drive connected to your main pc over this setup, best to get the basics working first before playing with these though.
