Which TFT Monitor ?

W@yne (Elite) posted this on Monday, 22nd November 2004, 17:53

I am looking into buying a 17" TFT and I don`t have much of an idea on what to look for so can anyone offer a bit of advice on which of these two are the better buy

1. 17 inch Medion from Aldi @ £199 3 year ( normally no hassle at Aldi ) warranty .
1280 x 1024 maximum resolution.
Diagonal screen size of 43cm
Horizontal viewing angle of 150º
Vertical viewing angle of 135º
On-screen display
Two built-in speakers
Contrast 500:1
Brightness 300CD/M2

2. 17 inch Samsung from Currys @ £199 3 year warranty
1280 x 768 resolution
16.2 million display colours
Brightness display (250cd/m2)
Contrast ratio (350:1)
388 mm Height
382 mm Width
176 mm Depth
4.8 kg Weight
3 year warranty

I know there are some better deals on the web but I have been told to collect it from a store in because of the chance of dead pixels , is this true ?

Thanks

There could be a dead pixel regardless of where it comes from.
Manufacturers usually quote that 1 pixel per million is acceptable, usually equates to about 15 dead pixels before a screen is classed faulty (although didn`t think the one I`m using now has 15 million pixels, but acer manual quotes 1 per million!)

The one I am using now is an Acer AL1714, £199 from Comet.
Superb monitor and has <14Ms response time ( <~~ thats the important one! higher Ms response times means screen lag, means don`t attempt to watch video or play games as it don`t keep up with ya!)

Oh, and btw...I work for DSG ;)

Cheers Jimbo , didn`t think of Comet will have to get out and see what`s in stores locally.

That`s why I was thinking of using Aldi as they "seem" pretty good on returns.

How noticeable would 15 dead pixels be ?

Yes , I have noticed in a few of your other posts ;) , even been on here long enough to remember the time when you wouldn`t say who you worked for ;).

Thinking about the fact you work for DSG what would you say if a customer came in and asked to see a TFT working before he purchased it because of the dead pixel thing ? this would be easy enough to sort out wouldn`t it ?

Just been looking on the Comet website and seen this regarding response time

Quote:
Measured in milliseconds. Quicker response times are essential for lifelike moving images and free flowing movement on on your screen from your games and DVDs. The higher the number the better.

Shouldn`t that be the lower the number the better ?

i`ve just ordered the iiyama 431 for £240(i think!) from savastore.co.uk, it seems to get consistently good reviews.

look at this months custom pc for excellent reviews of 17" TFTs

Most Currys branches have either all TFT`s up and running, or at least a variant thereof (in mine we have the Proview 14" on a gondola end running, the 15" Proview paired with an Emachine, and the 17" just on display...only because there is nothing there to "drive" it!)

On the Curry`s gondola ends for TFT monitors, they usually have a switchbox that allows multiple monitors running from one source, so chances are you could see it.
If you wanted to see a particular monitor running that wasn`t, unless it was being brought from the storeroom to be put on display (ie: new item, just in and not out, so easy to unbox and connect) the chances at this time of year are very very slight.

We`re ridiculously busy, and taking time to do something like this might be what most decent sales people would want and like to, but circumstances would kill it.

Dead pixels depend on location. Very edge of screen, hard to notice, from an inch or so inwards, goddamned easy to see!

Honestly, buy the Comet Acer. I did, and I have had absolutely no regrets with it :D

PS: yeah, it`s a screw up by Comet, the lower the number = the faster the response time = better for screen "lag"

Will be near Comet on friday so I will probably go in and get the Acer if they have one in stock.

Thanks again for your help and advice.
