Page 1 of Coverting avi/divx/etc. files to play on normal DVD player?

The question is, what program do I need to do this? I have a ton of films and tv shows all squished on a single DVD but need to play them via my PC and would like to use my normal DVD player which, obviously, cant lay DIVX things. Thanks folks.

TMPGenc will convert most DivX and variant formats to PAL-though you may need to install a few codec`s for some of the more unusual ones. Even converint them to VCD quality you will increase the file size.

It`s a fair bit of messing, as not only do you have to do the conversions, you are going to have to author them and then burn-if you`ve got to buy DVD authoring software just for doing this, then it would probably be cheaper to buy a DivX enabled DVD player.

Or , as an alternative, does your video card have TV out? You could always send the output from there to the TV- If the TV is a long way away, you could always use a video sender (The ones they had for 25 quid in Aldi last week work great)

I recommend that £30 Skyworth divx dvd player from WH Smith - it`s *great*.

I started to do the conversion using the mentioned software. For some reason it wouldnt shrink it enough to fit on a DVD. No matter, it takes 20 hours to convert and my pc is connected to my TV anyway. Just wanted to do stuff for my pal. Cheers anyway.

Once you`ve created the DVD file, run it through DVDShrink (free download) to squeeze it onto a DVD.

A word of caution though. If these are *cough* backups you are downloading off the net, you will find that you will have loads of problems with sound. Sometimes it will dissapear, sometimes it will get waaaaay out of synch.

I just run all my TV shows through NeroVision Express without converting to Pal. I can normally fit 4 episodes of a US 45 minute show onto a disc, but I normally only put 3 on as the quality can start to drop a little. It takes about 3 hours per disc to converty 3 shows.


DLAM, I have never had any problems with sound doing the above. If you have problems with Tmpgenc getting out of synch when you convert to PAL you can fix it. If I remember right, you rip the audio using Vuirtual Dub then input the video and sound as seperate streams. It should then output all in synch and no dropout. There were instructions on DVDRhelp.com

Are you talking about films you have downloaded (owning the originals first of course!) or are you talking about things tyou have recorded yourself? I was talking about the former.

It`s not Tmpgenc that causes the problem, it`s minor glitches that often occur when that much data is being downloaded. The data correction causes the sound to get out of synch when decompressing

VLC media player has controls for synching audio. you can + or - milliseconds to get it back into synch. Only had to use it once on scooby doo2, the file had a little corruption at the beginning anyway so I wasnt surprised.

I was using a couple of BT sites, but they have closed down now, as mentioned in other threads. :( Havent d/l anything since before xmas. So I need to start looking for some new sites myself.
