GeForce 6800 Ultra

It`s pay-day & I`m going to grab me one of these bad boys. Anybody know as to where I can get it cheaper than this (top of the page)?

Have you checked out the benchmarks for the 6800 Ultra verses the 6800 GT?

When I did, I thought the extra few fps didn`t seem worth the extra money.

Sure thing RJ.

Also am I right in thinking these top of the range cards are hugely scarce in street retailers? :/ Really wanted to go out & by a card today.

What games you going to be running on it?

Just got my ATI X800XTPE last week, was a long wait, but got it for £325 from dabs.

I get about 70fps on Doom3, at full settings at 1280x1024. But i think i will be playing hl2/dm/cs-s more and so the ATI cards are better for that.

Plus ATI takes less power from the system, you need a min of 480w power supply for the 6800 ultra, and the ATI take up less space, requires only 1 slot, whereas the 6800 need 2 slots due to the big ass fan and heat sink.

just my 2 cents.

cheers

Gosh darnit, why does everything have to be so complex! How`d I check if my power supply is sufficent enough? I wish upgrading was more idiot-friendly >:(

I`ve weighed up both the x800 & 6800 cards, and come to the conclusion I ought to go for the later, especially considering I`m into Doom 3 big time.

Oh & more to the topic, can I actually get it much cheaper than that price stated on Overclockers?

Well I got the card yesterday, fitted it in correctly (to my knowledge) and am now having some issues with what I think might be due to an insufficent PSU :/

Though I did install the Nvidia drivers over the old ATI ones before I removed them. Anyway, desktop activites are fine, but whenever I try to launch a game, it`ll freeze & reboot my system after a short while.

It does state on my PSU case that it has a 460w.

Oh a 460w psu, hmm so u need an extra 20w :/ lol

You said u installed the NVIDIA drivers OVER the ati ones? If that's the case then that might be the issue. Before you installed your new card, what you should always do before removing the old card, is uninstall any video drivers that came with that card, in your case the ati ones.

Then power off, replace card, and install the new ones.

Try using this Driver Cleaner program, it might help remove the ati drivers that may still be present on ur system, and which may be causing u the problems.

If not that, I hate to say it; a system reinstall of the OS might be a good idea. And the last resort, a new PSU.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Well, Antec make quality PSU`s.

I have the Antec PSU True Blue 480w Blue Led Fan version.
Get at least 480w or above.

Good luck.

Cheers
