There is a site that offers region free firmware, but you have to flash it to your DVD drive, which "could" balls it up. I tried it before on my old Ti Powerbook and it worked a treat.
Bookmarked on my Mac, so will post back later.
What's the type and model of you Mac?
Update #1:
ok here is the link..
But be aware of the risks before you do it, and if you do, make sure you use the correct file for flashing/ updating your firmware.
Update #2:
On the same site as above, under the tools section, a program called Region X if I remember correctly lets you reset the number of times you can switch between regions on the DVD player. But.. I think your DVD player as to have region free firmware installed for this to work. If that's the case, you`ll have to update it.

OR…
I do remember a workaround for this, without the need to flash your firmware.
You put in your region 1 disc, and tell it to change region, this would tell you that you had 4 changes left. But this would not register until you quit the DVD player. So when you were finished with the DVD player, you "Force Quit" DVD player, instead of "Quitting" it. Doing this would not let the Mac remember the settings to change, thus you still had all your 5 changes left.
Hope this helps.
Good luck
