How do you convert different files into jpegs?

kt123 (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 12th November 2005, 03:19

I`ve got a website on lycos free web building tool - tripod.
The only trouble is whenever i try and add a picture to the site more often than not it says `sorry we can`t except this type of file, please convert to a jpeg`
Most images i come across only seem to let me copy them as ART or BITMAP.
So i was wondering, is there any way i can convert the files? Or am i doing something wrong with the saving of the pictures in the first place?
Cheers.

What program are you using to create/edit the pictures in? There should be an option to "save as", and from there an option to choose file type - JPG/JPEG (same thing) should be listed there.

There will also generally be options for the quality/compression used on the image - possibly a slider with quality at one end and compression at the other. The higher the compression the lower the file size (and therefore your web page will download quicker), but the lower the image quality too. It`s a balancing act. For web use, I find 70% quality (or it could be expressed as 30% compression) gives a decent image and low file size.

Hope that helps!

If the software you use at the moment doesn't do what you need for file conversion as RichardH said above, you could try Xnview.
I've used this a lot in the past without any problems and best of all, it's free :D .

Hope it helps

I`m not using any specialist software to create/edit the pictures in.
I`m using windows xp and just right clicking on suitable photos (usually found on google images) then selecting `Save Picture As..` the only options i usually find myself with are to change the file to ART or Bitmap.

Surely you can open the pictures in PaintBrush in Windows XP and save them as JPG files.

Most images on google image or whatever are copyrighted - sticking them on your website without crediting them is THEFT. 8)
