There are two files which HAVE to live on your main computer drive, they`re in My Music\iTunes
They`re iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl
They`re basically the data base files that iTunes uses.

If you install iTunes on the External, you will need to leave these files where they are.
You will need to change the Music Folder location in the Edit/Preferences/Advanced tab in iTunes. transfer your music to an appropriately named folder
Also tick the "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" and the Copy files to iTunes folder when adding to Library" boxes.

Once you`ve done all this, if you still can`t see your files in iTunes, try "Consolidate Library" in the Advanced menu

hope this helps

Steve
