taskbar icons

Hiya,
how can I take items of my taskbar? I have found out how I can hide them but I want some things permanently of the taskbar cos there is so much on there that it is slowing my laptop down. I am using xp if that makes a difference to how this is done.

Steve.

Do you mean in the System Tray?

Try going into options for each of them and untick box that says "Run at start-up" or similar.

Then look in Start > Programs > Start-Up, and delete anything in there (just a short-cut, you won`t uninstall the prog or anything).

Or click on Start > Run > then type msconfig. Click on the Start-Up tab, then you will get a list. Untick all that you *know* you don`t want to run when you boot up. If you don`t know or don`t know what`s it`s for, then leave it. Click Apply/OK and it will ask you to reboot. Reboot and when you get back on, there will be a box saying you`re running "Selective Start-Up". Tick the "Don`t tell me" box, and click OK.

Steve,
I assume that you`re talking about the icons down in the right hand corner, next to the clock. You have to be a bit careful as to which ones you "get rid of" as some are quite useful/important.
I use Spybot-Search and Destroy, not only for protection against spyware, but one of the tools it provides is a system startup analyser, which lists all the programs that start up along with Windows when you start it up, and where it can, it will tell you what the program is and what it does etc. You can also disable any of the programs from starting up and trying a re-boot to see if there are any adverse effects before you decide to actually delete it.
There are a couple of others that I have used in the past, but can`t remember which they were.
Hope it helps.
(edit:XFG beat me to it! Spybot just adds some bells and whistles!).

Have you tried switching it on........?
