Andy_R (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 28th December 2005, 16:40

I have some avi files on my PC which I would like to play on my home DVD player but when I try to add these files using Nero a prompt comes up stating that it cant perform the task!?! Do I have to convert these avi files to another form?
Many thanks for your suggestions......

Hi Andy,

I use winavi to convert the files first then you can burn them to DVD. This thread may help.

There is also all the information you will ever need on Video Help.

I have the same problem. I`ve just downloaded the last 3 episodes of Lost and the next 9 of S2 and want to put them on DVD. The only way I could was to encode the last 3 episodes using DVDSanta (took about 6 hours to do and burn!). Worked fine just a little time consuming. I havent bothered with the other 9 episodes though. I just watched them on the old PC.

There has to be an easier way?

There`s only the time consuming way. I couldn`t be arsed to go through it either and just bought a DivX capable DVD player from Ebuyer (I was gonna put a link up, but they don`t appear to have any in stock at the moment) for about £40. It will play the .avi`s straight on your TV, as well as being a multi-region dvd player.

Look out for a Yamada Umax 6700 player - that`s what I used. You can just burn the .avi to CD or DVD (you can get about 12 eps of Lost on a DVD) the usual way so it`s quick :D

VSO divx2DVD will do this - but it does take a while. (Free though)

The best solution would be a DIVX-capable DVD player which can be got very cheaply.

I`ve also put all the episodes of Lost onto DVD for my mum and a few guys at work, did take a while right enough but was well worth it.

I use Nero Vision 4, as it can add a front menu system for selecting each episode, 5 episodes of whatever per disk. I set it off to run over night, when i get up it`s all done.

i`ll second VSO divx2DVD its a very good little program. not too many options but to be honest you only need the aspect and ntsc/pal settings. i used to use it for lost episodes every week. on average each episode only took 25mins to encode. it was worth the wait as i could then watch them on my telly, i found the computer screen wasent ideal, the image was sometimes too dark. it felt like you were missing something.

but i recently got a new dvd player that is divx too,and its great, just a few minutes in nero and everything has played, better than it did before.

I used to use nero
For all my DVD file conversion stuff. Unfortunately, for whatever reason it started going all pete tong. Now I use separate programs that are a lot faster.

DIVXtoDVD is a program that a lot of people use. This will accept a whole host of video formats and convert them to a VIDEO_TS folder.
DIVXtoDVD will also burn the discs for you too.

Using the above will just get the Video onto a disc, no menus. If you want to have a disc with menus.. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author

This is an easy to use program that can edit the video and then produce basic menus for your disc.

I also use DVD LAb PRO For a complete DVD. This a prog that is more advanced and gives complete control over what your DVD will be like.

All of the above are chargeable. But if you look in certain places There are alternative options
