Hard Drive just won`t be a slave! - Update and another question...

flyingmonkey (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 17th June 2006, 13:09

Hi all

I am running XP Pro on an Abit NF7-S2 motherboard with two Maxtor drives; a 200gb and a 120gb DiamondMax.

The 120 is shafted and so I am wanting to slave it to use Ghost and recover files off it. Both drives are connected to my motherboard with the same ATA133, round, yellow IDE cable.

No matter what I try and do the PC keeps trying to boot from the slaved 120 drive. I have tried jumpers, cable select and checked that the BIOS recognises the 120 drive as slave and it does. However, no matter what I do it keeps trying to boot from the slave.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Nick

have you allready installed xp onto the 200gig drive ?

if so, as an experiment try disconecting the 120gig drive altogether, just to make sure it boots ok. provided that works ok, double check the 200gig drive is attached to ide0 & set to master, then add the 120gig drive to ide2 also as master, then if required put the dvd drive on ide3 as slave & see what happens when you try to boot up.

also, in bios, disable the boot from other devices option untill you get it sorted.

hope this helps :)

Never mind, it`ll all come out in the wash.

Sir Pron...

Thanks for your reply. Yes the 200gb drive is running Windows and does boot when the 120gb is not connected. I will try the `disable boot from other devices`.

Thanks again

Nick

I don`t think it is "Boot from other devices". The BIOS should allow you to select the boot order of the hard discs and it is simply a case of selecting the 200GB hard disc as the highest priority.

so i was assuming he`s allready tried that, & was suggesting the next step, i`ve had ide motherboards that have been a pain in this way, thank god sata makes it easier :)

I still don`t think disabling "boot from other devices" will work and I suspect that he has not set the hard disk boot priority correctly. He may have tried a lot of things but I am sure that he hasn`t tried setting hard disk boot priority.

The terms master and slave is a misnomer and both drives have equal status. Just because one is master does not mean it should boot up first. The priority of the boot up is specified in the BIOS. The boot up of other devices is used for a device other than the hard disks connected to IDE or SATA and in fact many BIOS`s do not have the option of "boot other device" but rather provides more specific boot device such as from LAN or USB device.

Try swapping them around on the IDE cable connections too. (master in the middle)

Ste

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

I will double check this.

Thanks all.
