Wireless Network help please

colseddon (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd January 2007, 21:22

Ok I was having the problem keeping my laptop connected to net thru my linksys wireless router on ntl but sorted that but have to de-select windows after connection or will lose connection every 5 minutes.

Ok my problen is everytime I turn the laptop on to connect to net I have to de-select the open wireless network which it keeps going to as default to WPA etc. This means my connection is not password protected I believe and the wireless router has to be left on permantly or it seems to lose all the set up so cant really turn it off.

Any help in how I can make my wireless network encrypted and for it to remain that way would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Colin

if the router isn`t remembering any settings then i`d suggest it`s faulty.

usually, after you make a change to a routers settings, you click on an
APPLY or OK button to confirm the changes and the router remembers these
next time it`s switched on.....there`s no reason why you can`t turn a router off and on,
mine is only on when i`m using it...it`s off at any other time.

have a good read of your manual to see if you are missing anything. i`ve not had the
displeasure of messing with linksys routers (prefer netgear) so therefore i can`t comment
on the available settings.

I`m not familiar with Linksys either, but I have been caught by units not retaining settings. On some kit the APPLY/OK button only applies the settings to the current session but does not save them to Flash.

Colin, have a look around the menus on the router and see if there is something along the lines of `Save settings and Reboot`. It could be that you need to take seperate action to permanently retain the revised settings.
