PC trouble

deals (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 14th June 2007, 13:11

The power to my desktop pc cuts out now and again and computer will not start, but if keep pressing the power button fast several times it seems to come back.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

Worth backing up files, or getting new desktop pc?

Could be anything, though getting a new desktops is last option, probably a loose wire on you motherboard, powersupply on the way out, fan faliure pc might be shutting down due to overheating.

You will need to open you pc up to have a look, unless you still have warranty on it, then give your pc tech guys a ring.

dont think its fan as it just wont start when press button to startup sometimes.
have to keep pressing button a few times, then it starts.
doesn`t cut-off in the middle of things.
is it more likley to be loose wire or power supply on way out?

I had something similar to this cutting out/ on-off button caper and it turned out to be the fan on the graphics card/heat-sink that`d burnt out.

New card solved the problem.

If it powers down a few seconds after switching on, it can sometimes point to a failure in the POST test routine - something like an under-voltage check from the mobo or a fan rev count failure, etc.,etc.. Do you get any unusual beeps from the system before it cuts out? If so the beep sequence will indicate the failure type in a BIOS manual.

Just a thought...hope you solve it anyway... :)

Just craptacular....
