Re installing XP

My PC is playing up lately,so I have decided to re-install XP on a cleaned HD.Is it really neccesary to partition the drive.What are the advantages or disadvantages of partitioning.Thanks for any help.I have a 160gb HD

Partitioning really doesn`t give you any performance benefits.

The only real benefit you have is if you want to re-install Windows again, you could store your docs etc. on a separate partition that you don`t wipe when re-installing. (e.g. store docs on D: Windows installed on C:)

If you`re re-installing XP and don`t want to go through the activation process again, remember to back up the wpa files first.

Also - I`d strongly suggest that you take an image of the final install (when its all done) so that if you want to re-install again in a few months (as I often do) - you could just restore the image rather than going through the re-installation process.
