The main contention is that thae hardware test says that my atheros wi-fi card is there. But I can onlu use a wired internet conection.
I`ve only ever known windows.
thanks

Jemma - as Al said on the other thread you posted on this, you`re better off asking in an Ubuntu specific forum.
Try here for starters:

Miles yes I have had a look.
What your refering to asumes that I have knowledge of Linux which I do not.
Seversl year ago I tried a different distro, but had to give up because of a lack of support for my epson 1670 scanner. I even set up a dual boot to make things easier. It took so long chasing my tail that it was easier to reformat my hard drive and go back to xp.

What I`m referring to is simply the documentation/help pages for Ubuntu etc.
There are tons of forums/wiki`s etc. over the Internet that talk about Ubuntu and lots of sites designed for the `noobs` out there.
So like I said, you`re better asking those kind of questions to a forum where its the speciality.

RE: Miles linux help needed **please**
There`s an absolute beginners forum over on the Ubuntu forums page. Honestly, you could do much worse than to post up there. There`s bound to be someone who can help. I would definitely have a look around and find out if your wireless card is doable in Linux first. Really, I would have recommended you do this before you install Linux, as one of the biggest problems facing Linux today is device drivers. It`s a similar issue for Vista users.
Don`t let the terminal scare you off. You`re bound to need to use it, and I`m quite sure that no-one on the Ubuntu forums will presume you have a prior knowledge. Have you tried the "Network" applet in System/Administration?

I believe it is the Atheros wifi card that is fitted in the Asus eeepc so it is supported in their custom Linux OS which is a variant of Xandros. I am not sure if its drivers have been included in other Linux distributions.
Ah Linux. Thats better. :)
