Page 1 of Expect Windows 7 to be costly, Dell warns

Silly Microsoft.


Here was me hoping for Microsoft to finally release Windows with sane prices, and it looks like their going the other way! I`m not bothered really, as I mostly use Linux anyway (with a bit of gaming on XP), but what do you all think here? My general feeling is this will probably create more pirate copies than if they`d released it at a decent price, but it seems MS don`t feel that way.

I think it`s MS testing the reactions to the `news`.
I still think their pricing will be similar to Vista.

Perhaps it`s the OEM costs to the manufacturers that they`re getting upset about - given that MS have probably given them a cheap ride what with the Vista debacle and still having to licence XP for some machines (netbooks)...so Windows 7 will seem expensive by comparison.

the thing is, most ppl don`t know/care/understand when they buy a PC they are paying for Windows. If some-one wants to pay £500 for a PC from Dell, dell will still sell them one, it`s just the "bang for your buck"/homebuilders who will notice the difference.

Dell for example sell Ubuntu PCs, but as you know they hide that away, and don`t advertise the same model PCs with Ubuntu/XP/Vista,so you have to fiddle with the customise options to see what you`re paying for the OS. it`s only sites like Novatech which will sell a PC without an OS then have the option to add different OSs that make it clear what an OS costs, but I think the sort of person looking at them is some-one like a homebuilder, but is too lazy to actually do the building himself ;)

That`s true, but many people are still running XP (ahem), have PC`s that are W7 capable, and will have no doubt heard the buzz about it and want to buy it. I quite fancied buying a retail box version in the hope that Microsoft got their act together with some reasonable pricing. Not to be, sadly. I keep hearing about a subscription based model too, which really has to be the worst idea I`ve ever heard.

I`ll keep an eye on it, but I can`t see me paying £130+ for an OS. It`s a shame. How are you getting on with the RC, Admars?

I`ve had no real issues with RC7, it`s better than Vista.

the only slight issue I had was that media centre won`t let me change the quality of the recording using my usb tv card, but I was happy that it had the drivers and i didn`t have to install anything to use it to watch freeview programs. (can`t get drivers for it in any Linux :( )

I`ve installed the blaze software that came with it and that works fine, records at lower quality so is good.

Apart from that firefox and thunderbird are the only other apps I`ve played with and they work fine, no crashes.

Seamonkey crashes at radiotimes.com but I think that is flash/seamonkey 2 alpha related as the site works fine in Firefox.

I think the OS has blue screened on me once. I think that was while trying to record using the usb tv device, so maybe it ran out of disk space and died horribly. Unfortunately I hadn`t turned off reboot on blue screen so I couldn`t be sure what happened.

i think if I was to buy a new PC today, and had the choice of XP or Vista, I`d choose XP. But if in a couple of months time I was to buy a new one, and had the choice of XP, Vista, Windows 7, I`d choose Windows 7. Obviously that`s only if I was interested in playing games, if I wasn`t I wouldn`t buy an OS :)

I`ll be sticking with XP then until I buy a PC that comes with it. On my laptop the RC runs fine, but not enough to want me to spend £150 on it.

Four words: having a f***ing laugh.

PCPro reported today that people can pre-order it from 15th July for £50 (for Home Premium), and that it will be the full version (without I.E.)
if that`s true I`ll be ordering it.
