Should I smash my MyBook?

1mills (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 3rd June 2009, 10:47

By that I mean the casing to get the hard drive out.

Basically the plug has snapped at the end of the power supply, so it is currently useless. I thought the answer was just to get a universal ac adapter.

Maplins cheapest one was £18 and it happened to be a lad I knew from school who was working who told me to sack that off and get one off Ebay or something instead.

Basically though I`m struggling to find anything for less than that price.

It`s 12V and 1500somethings?? (I`m getting all technical on you now ;) ) that it needs.

Basically I begrudge paying £18 for a new one when the 1tb drive only cost £60 in the first place.

£60 would still be cheap for it as an internal drive and then I`ll go out and get a USB powered smalller drive for general purposes. I`m also not going to be between two address for a short while so less need for everything on one hard drive going back and forth.

Would it be hard to get the Hard drive out of the Mybook casing?

I thought you could just change the plug, but my mate wasn`t too keen on doing it and he does a lot of that kind of stuff.

His general opinion was "that`s f***ed"

It stopped working at first and I noticed it was frayed, my response to this dilemma was some sellotape and bending it so the power come on. Sparks were flying out, but it meant I could watch Damages on the treadmill.

I repeated this a few times but it finally frayed too much to actually power it but sparks were flying out.

I`m 25years old, I should know better but I`m also

b) Carefree
c) Too much of a tightarse to pay for the cable :D

ha ha ha!

i have a multi adapter that i bought from argos = it has a number of different settings and end choices - none of which fits the mixer i bought it for

everytime i see it i am tempted to throw it out the window so i might be tempted to post it - if i can find all the ends

would that be any handy?

Cheers for offer, but from what I`ve noticed looking around it seems the one I need needs 12V which is quite standard but 1500ma (I`ve looked it up), which I think is over and above what most of them have?

In fairness I planned on just walking into Argos buying an adapter that looked right and then plugging it in, but couldn`t find any as couldn`t work out what to search for. Picked one up in Comet and asked if that would be any good (as I was holding my hard drive).

They told me if I plugged that one into it, my hard drive would have internally exploded :D

That`s the other worst thing I need to find one with the exact right power stuff and then find one that has the right adapter on the end. I don`t know the exact type of average typed whole that looks kind of like laptop adapter but bigger (as I tried plugging laptop adapter in ;) )

Can you post a picture of the Mybook plug part needed as i`ve got TON`s of adapters sitting around ??, I`ll check the 1500ma bit later ?

12v/1500mA is pretty bog standard. The problem`s the plug at the device end. You can pick up pretty inexpensive PSUs at Maplins or CPC with interchangeable ends.

If you do have something suitable that would be awesome, just let us know what you`d want for it.

This is the end on it

It`s completely stopped working now, but haven`t been able to work out why :D

It was Maplins that told me that the cheapest one they had that was suitable was £18.

According to the plug it is-

Input: 100-240V~ 50/60Hz 500ma

Output: 12.0V 1500ma.

Universal laptop supply should be able to cover that, and if it`s only that bit that`s cut in two that`s the problem it`s a p*** easy repair unless it`s a moulded unit (no screws)

Oh, and almost every power supply Maplin do can be bought cheaper direct from the Chinese Fleabayers who sell them, just without the Maplin badge on them (and yes, I HAVE checked a couple of the instruction manuals and packaging)

It is a molded plug on the end. :(

What exactly do I search for on Fleabay, been looking and they are coming in pricey, but it`s probably because I`m not searching on the exact thing I need and probably getting something that does a lot more.

Is it a big job to take the hard drive out of the Caddy, as I`m thinking with all the wiring that I would have from a laptop supply, I might be better off getting USB powered drive for portability anyway?
