Do I buy an iPhone 4 or a 3GS?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 19th January 2011, 08:30

My 3G sadly died recently and the insurance are now providing me with £400 to purchase a new one. The question is now do I use the £400 to buy a 3GS or do I put £100 of my own money in and get an iPhone 4 instead? Is the iPhone 4 £100 better than the 3GS?

I`ve been pretty impressed with what I`ve seen on the Iphone 4 in fairness.

I`m guessing that Iphone 5 or whatever will be out in 6months, so the 3GS is going to be fairly odd school by then and I`m sure there will come a point soon, where certain apps/games etc are going to be not supported aswell.

I`m assuming you going to be planning on keeping it a couple of years at the price aswell, so will be 4 years old towards the end of it`s life.

Iphone 4 is double the size aswell as 16gb minimum whereas only 8gb Iphone 3G`s available?

You have pretty much said everything thats been going through my mind. it`s crossed my mind about the iPhone 5 but I am not going last 6 months without a phone in all honesty. Plus you could use that arguement for anything that you buy technology wise and end up just waiting for the next iteration all the time.
I am thinking that by purchasing this phone it will last me 2 years minimum (that`s what a contract length would be anyway if I didn`t just buy the phone outright to start) so by getting the 4 I can at least future proof myself as much as possible.
I am currently on a rolling 30-day contract with t-mobile. Does anyone know if they will send me a micro-SIM for this or will they force an iPhone tariff on me?

Bezza - just pop into a T-mobile store and ask them for a micro-sim. They should give you one without any hassle.
Then you`ll just need to call their customer services to migrate your number onto the new sim card.

Personally I`d buy an iPhone 4 over the 3GS at this point.

I love my iPhone 4. I`d definitely not get a 3GS if you use it for more than a phone, since the 4 is significantly faster than the 3GS, and the display is fantastic.

Upgrading from a 3GS would be more difficult thing to justify, but you aren`t really!

Or, if you can`t be bothered with the hassle of changing your number over to a new sim (if there is a hassle involved), you can just cut your sim down to micro-sim size (they`re the same size, just the micro has less plastic around the edges). You can do it yourself (guides are all over t`internet), or get one of these:

Micro Sim Card Cutter

And, personally, I`d pay the extra £100 and get the iPhone 4 - it`s superior in so many ways.

Thankfully it was pretty simple and easy for me.
On O2 it was effective after 20 mins using their website.
On Vodafone it was effective after 30 mins, following a call to customer services.

I`ve no reason to doubt T-Mobile (or any operator to be honest) would be that different.
