Watch your updates

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Sunday, 1st May 2011, 22:04

Just powered up the PC, and was dismayed to see it running slower than a ZX81 without a ram pack. I also had a flicker every few seconds on the screen. After the usual checks, there wasn`t anything suspiscious running in the background. I have installed Ubuntu in a partition but that shouldn`t affect windows.

Going old school, I restored my PC to the time I switched it on. Turns out windows update installed an update on startup which killed my system. I`m all good now, but Windows is telling me there`s an update for MSSE. I`m very loathe to install it, in case that`s the bastard that killed it. Suffice to say, I`ve stopped my system automatically installing.

Had a similar occurrence with mine yesterday. I manually ran the updates and all seemed fine for me after that.

Windows Update installed IE9 on my system yesterday and it forcibly closed all other programs including firewall and anti-virus to install it, which I found worrying - they don`t normally have to do that!

Me too, that made me wonder if any app installation could do that, and if so how long before Trojans start doing it.

Thats why I always set my Automatic Updates options to

"Notify me but don`t automatically download or install them"

that why I can be sure of what I`m downloading first and that it won`t trash my system. Such as WGA, for instance which I`m never going to install. I`ve stilll got a service pack update waiting for Win 7 and I`m not sure I want IE 9 at all.
