Page 1 of O.S space

on my computer it says i have 74.5gb of OS to which i have only 5gb left on the hard drive c.

i have 201gb out of 202gb free marked data d. can i make the os part bigger easily.

defrag your hard drive, then use a program such as gparted which can be booted off a livecd to resize

which has a free version you install in windows, and is v good, it`s basically a free alternative to Partition Magic.

NB backup before you do it, as I have found gparted and EaseUS to work perfectly every time, but you never know, it is a risky process.

It would be best to check whether it is a single drive already partitioned, or if it`s two separate drives.
Given the sizes, I suspect it is one drive, but best to double check.

Not sure which operating system you`re using (assuming a version of Windows given the drive letters!), but you need to find "Computer Management", then within that, "Disk Management".
That will show you the physical disks, and then any partitions on them.

Then, if it`s one disk, you can do as Al suggests and resize the partitions as you need them.

I will also re-iterate the point that Al made about backing up first, it is not risk free.

Dumb question I know, but have you checked your temp files and how much is in your recycle bin?

Checkdisc might find some lost space, and I`m sure Windoze has a utility to clear junk out of the OS...

Best to do all that before mucking around with partitions and stuff.

Believe it or not, I actually have 10GB of crap in my recycle bin. I really out to clear that stuff out one of these days, although only 300MB is from my C drive...

EDIT: Just been through my C: Drive to give it a clean...

C: Properties Disc Cleanup, went through my C: drive and found temporary files, internet files andfiles in the recycle bin to delete and got rid of a gigabyte worth of files...

Same window, other options tab, offers the choice of deleting System Restore and Shadow Copies, erasing all but the most recent system restore point. (Obviously don`t do this if your system regularly crashes, and needs restoring), but I did it and it freed up another 6 and half GB of space on C.

have been burning music that i had downloaded and put them on to disc to try and free up os but still only have 2.29gb free. i have noticed some programmes are listed in folders when it doesnt show on uninstall on control panel. how can i delete these if there not on control panel. have refrained from altering partions as not that happy to tackle summat im not to sure of.
i am running windows 7

Why not just move all your data files to the d: drive?

how do you do that and is it easy for someone who knows basics but not in depth knowledge of computers

If it`s Windows 7 (and, I think, Vista) you should be able to extend/shrink partitions natively.
