Page 1 of CPU swap advice please

Back once again asking for a little advice. The final step in completely replacing my Trigger's broom of a PC will be to swap out the CPU. I've been using the current one since I first put my hand-built PC together many, many years ago. These are the specs via Speccy



I'm led to understand that it's a breathtakingly simple process. Take one out, pop new one in, apply paste and let the BIOS adjust for a bit.

Looking around I'm not finding much new that would suit the socket. As a benchmark I'm looking at Hogwarts Legacy's recommended. Ignore the message about outdated graphics drivers. Mine are very up to date



Recommended is Intel Core i7-8700 (3.2Ghz). Everything else is up to spec but I do get 'pulsing' gameplay at times

I doubt you could do much CPU upgrading to be honest - and definitely not to anything that's been available for quite a few years.
Yours is an i5 Second Gen processor - 11+ years old.  It will have a completely different slot arrangement to CPU's available now - and probably even to just the 3rd and 4th Gen.
We're on 13th Gen now I think.
I'd be interested to know where it says it's breathtakingly simple - unless it's just referring to a same gen 'swapout'.
I'm sure you need a new motherboard - and with that comes the 'Is my RAM compatible?' question etc.......

My motherboard is actually quite new, only got it a few years ago and used my existing components to pack it out

Yeah, a simple swapout is like when you first built it and BIOS should sort things out.
What is the motherboard - does it say what it can support?  Interesting that a fairly new mobo supports the very old CPU.

Yep, just check old emails and looks like I bought it just under 3 years ago. But going over trhe conversation I had with the very nice man at PcUpgrade, we did have to whittle down the options due to the age of the i5

In retrospect, methinks a MB upgrade should be the first step, but it'll have to wait. I've got some shares maturing at the end of the year so I'll just bide my time and give myself an early xmas present. Cheers for the advice tho

Yes, that's make lots of sense - although 'new', your actual choice of motherboard was dictated by the CPU age.
A mobo upgrade is the main thing you'll need - maybe dictated this time by the RAM you have.
Some people need to always have the latest and greatest - often for minimal benefit.  An Ebay CPU/mobo combo someone is 'upgrading' from may be a good option towards the end of the year?

Things I believe to be true:

1. Whenever you want to upgrade your CPU, the second hand prices of any CPU that will fit your motherboard is crazy high because lots of other people are doing the same
2. You are better off buying a new motherboard + CPU + RAM every time. It is a lot more expensive but pound per performance you will be better off
