free software for editting software

the missus has said she wants to learn how to "photoshop" some of our photos, she doesn't seem to know exactly what she wants to do until she starts to play, but I'd imagine it's going to be remove red eye, try to remove something from a photo that's spoiling it, spot, person etc :)

I think gimp may be overwhelming for her, I know I get a bit lost in it trying to do simple things. A friend of mine who uses photoshop all day at work once gave me an hour long lesson, I got home, had a bit of a play and gave up.

gimp and paint.net, and mspaint are all I've used for v basic editing.

since paint.net and gimp are free I'll put them on her laptop to play with, but wondered what else ppl would recommend for some-one that knows a bit about how to use a computer, but doesn't have any graphics design experience, and probably wants results quickly rather than spending days getting the image perfect.

I saw RawTherapee mentioned in the pc software thread,  never heard of that before, but the price is right :)

if there is something amazing for a few quid, then I guess I'll have to stump up the cash :(

thanks

An easy but old paint/editing program is PSP5 (paint shop pro 5)

It is free but I will let you google it and decide which download to go for, as some can have malware and other tack on unwanted programs.

But if you can get a reputable download, then its a good program and easy to use. I have on disk.

RawTherapee is principally designed for editing photos shot in RAW format, which is only available with DSLR and high-end compact cameras - most compact cameras produce JPEG files. You could look at the free version of PhotoFiltre, which has quite a range of features specifically for JPEG editing.
