Khan V Barrera

What`s the opinion on this fight being made then? I know people on here follow boxing a lot closer than I do, so wondered what thoughts were on it.

When the lad I sit with said that Khan was fighting Barrera we both asked if was "the" Barrera thinking it could just be a namesake or something.

We then obviously checked out how old he was incase he was older than we remembered but at only 34 (35 tomorrow) he`s not at a ludicrous age.

Also he only lost on points to Manny Pacquiao just over a year ago aswell.

To me it seems a massive gamble by Khan seen as he was sparked out 2fights ago, plus he`d been caught countless times in the fights against lowly ranked opponents before that.

Don`t get me wrong, fairplay to them for taking the fight, they obviously feel that they can get some credibility back and in their opinion Barrera is past it. It`s more interesting than him fighting another milkman for a change! ;)

I`m actually quite tempted to go now, as it`s a Warren card, I`m assuming De Gale and Gavin etc who`ve all signed recently may be on the undercard aswell.

Just reading Frank Warren`s column and De Gale, Gavin and Saunders are fighting on his card in Birmingham on the 28 Feb, so I doubt I`ll go the Khan fight.

Cheapest seats are £40.

Well as one of Khan`s biggest critics, I have stated b4 that I see him as a Naz clone ie all flash and no substance, with a glass chin and arrogance which is unfounded I am to say the least surprised at this. Unless they know something about Barrera we dont ie he is shot or something then I think that Barrera could end Khan`s career like he did Naz`s, even a 70% Barrera should be way to strong and smart for Khan and even though he never had a huge punch he eventually wore down most fighters (certainly a lot stronger and tougher chin wise at least) than Khan.

Oh and Hello from Bangkok, gotta love this internet thing eh, eating Pizza and watching boring Chelski in bar :)

That`s a ridiculous comparison as, at this stage in his career, Naz had embarrassed a solid European Champion (Belcastro) and was probably World Champion. He went on to win several title belts, beat many reigning, former and future World Champions and is one of the most talented boxers Britain has produced since the Second World War. He got lazy and lost motivation, that`s why his performance levels dropped and Barrera beat him - the documentary following him before the fight shows how little attention he gave to preparation.

As for Khan`s clash with the Mexican legend, it will either be a disaster or an inspired piece of matchmaking - I`m not sure which one. Barrera is past his best, but I`m not sure how far past as I didn`t see his fight in China. Two fights ago he dropped a close points decision to the Pacman and two fights ago Khan was flat on his back seeing stars.

Roach is a top trainer and brilliant tactician but it`s a big step from Oisin Fagan to the Baby Faced Assassin - I`m going to wait till nearer the fight before predicting which way it will go.

Ur opinion, I would love to know how many times Naz was dropped, and by who, from memory i thought several times by fighters with little or no punch power, and i dont think he fought anyone who was top quality, he was lucky he held the poorest title, and until he fought Barrera was for me HIGHLY OVERRATED and I know i made money on Barrera destroying him, he was always open to uppercuts as he went in low, always seemed to disregard opponents and boxing in general.Bottom line is my suspicions were proved correct, same as when Khan was KO`d spark by a guy no one thought was dangeroud

Hamed was down against Kevin Kelley who was, at the time, a respected world level operator and holder of the WBU belt which wasn`t on the line. He was down against Augie Sanchez, not the best fighter in the world, but a dangerous puncher who Naz iced in shocking fashion.

Not only did Hamed hold the WBO belt (in my opinion the champion makes the belt, not the other way around), he also captured the IBF and WBC titles. he would have won the WBA if Wilfredo Vasquez hadn`t been stripped for choosing to fight Hamed as the WBA didn`t want their title unified with the WBO. He beat quality fighters like Tom Johnson, Kevin Kelley, Vasquez, Paul Ingle, Manuel Medina (when Naz had the flu) and Vuyani Bungu.

Whilst he was with the Ingles, Hamed was almost impossible to hit, had a stunning array of punches, brilliant footwork and punched like a middleweight. Although his best win was probably against Steve Robinson (no bum himself), his best performance was against Jose Badillo - an outstanding blend of skill and braggadocio. If you look at the scores, Barrera didn`t destroy him, winning by scores of 115 -112, 115 -112, 116 -111 - it wasn`t exactly a shutout.

Everyone though Breidis Prescott was dangerous, just not that dangerous - he`s probably fringe world class and would give many of the champions and top 10 lightweights nightmares. There is a lot to like about Khan: his jab, footwork, speed and power and if Freddy Roach improves his defence and works out a game plan, there`s no reason why he couldn`t work at long range and outbox the shorter Barrera over the distance using his superior reach. If Barrera can use all that guile and experience to get inside and land an overhand right or left hook on the other hand...

A quick look at the Lightweight rankings shows Breidis Prescott at #12 by the IBF and WBC, #13 by the WBA, #7 by the WBO and #19 by the IBO`s computerised rankings - it is an ultra competitive division with names like Barrera, Campbell, Guzman, Marquez, Raheem, Diaz (David and Juan) and Pacquiao! Khan will have to do something special to win a world title and hold it with all of those around.

Barrera is still a good fighter and you only need to touch him on the chin to hurt him.

As to the other prospects - Gavin is a good fighter, jury out on BJ Saunders but I really think Degale will be another Audley...

I am, by no means whatsoever, even a small boxing fan with massive interest. But from what I saw of Naz and what (little) I have seen of Khan I think I would have to agree with David at present.
Whatever his "flaws" Naz got the job done, and in style.
As yet Khan has done not a lot but show some form of promise

Got to say I was surprised to hear the name Barrerra as his next opponent. Didnt realise he was still going.
Even if Barrerra is past it I should imagine that a man with that much experience and history is going to be one hell of a challenge.
It could well be make or break time and maybe thats the whole point. Maybe the thought it that giving Khan such a task may see him knuckle down and get things right
