been meaning to stick this out here for weeks :
The proposed (i say that as I have literally just heard as I type that they have postponed putting this system in place this year) change in how the World Champion is decided
Good or Bad???
Seems ludicrous to me that the World Champ will be the man who wins most races and not the guy who accumulates most points.
I mean say there were 20 races
Driver 1 = Wins 10 crashes on first or second bend 10 times
Driver 2 = Wins 9 times, comes second 10 times and crashes once
There is no way that Driver 1 would, IMO, be the better driver in that example yet he`d get the trophy and the title
Driver 2 has obvioulsy displayed more consistancy and has practically won just as many races
To me, if and when, they implement this rule change it would make a joke of the competition
(apparently a points record would still be kept to place everyone in 2nd place and below at the end of the season and also as a "tie breaker" in the scenario where there was a tie at the top on the number of wins in the season)

RE: Oh one for you F1 fans. . . .
F1 in the last few years has gone by the wayside.
Yes I seen the new points system and it seems bizare.
I would like to see it run like they do for Indy Car in the States. Same engines for all teams but just the odd different chassis tweek etc.
There is too much of a gap between Maclaren / Ferrari and the back runners to make it interesting anymore.
Mansell won his first season in Indy as he was "the best" driver down to the driver not the car.was close racing and more exciting, not just on ovals but street races too.
Me sitting at the lights in my cossie with a punked up saxo/corsa reving along side me is exactly like F1 nowadays . . . . . . . . predictable
It`s a silly idea but lets give it a go
It all depends if one team is dominant
Should know within the first 5 races
RE: Oh one for you F1 fans. . . .
Regarding F1, what is ludicrous is the money that the Beeb are spending advertising it. As good as the `car chase` advert is, its totally over the top. Same goes for that Peggy Mitchell wedding advert that they are showing at the minute - it probably cost more to do that than a weeks worth of episodes.
Anyway, sorry to derail the thread. ;)

RE: Oh one for you F1 fans. . . .
The proposal that the drivers with the most wins becomes the champion was kicked in the long grass last week, though apparently it will be introduced in 2010. It`ll only work when there is a close season, like the last two, where it comes down to the last race. If one team is dominant and a driver scampers away to an early lead (I read some teams think this will happen with Brawn racing) it`ll kill the season at the halfway point.
My guess is they`ll see how it goes this year with all the new regulations and then see if the FIA and FOTA can come to some agreement about the future.

Why does it depend on whether one team dominates?
I know my example above was maybe "extreme" but in that situation neither driver has exactly dominated but one who would seem to be less consistent (and therefore IMO not the better driver) wins the title of World Champion - which to me is silly.
As I say I have heard this morning that they have decided to put off implementing the "most race victories wins the championship" and not use it this season but I havent confirmed that yet

F1 is more than just about the driver, without the team they won`t win
RE: Oh one for you F1 fans. . . .
This new system they are talking about is very flawed, if you get a dominant team/driver (as we`ve seen in the past with Senna/Prost/Mansell/Schumacher) and they win the 1st 9 races thats the championship over with.
This is exactly why they went from 10 points for 1st, 6 points for 2nd a few years back to the 10 for 1st, 8 for 2nd as it is now - to keep the championship alive for more of the season.
why take life so seriously..its not like you are going to make it out alive

Yes I understand that
My point is that the flaw in the suggested system has nothing to do with a team being dominant.
If a team is dominant then they will probably win on the points system and also on the "race victories" system
