Is it just me or....

Fowler9 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 9th June 2010, 12:52

... does anyone else think Chelsea are dropping a right clanger by not making sure they keep hold of Joe Cole?

(p.s. I understand that its not always in the clubs control)

Yep, I think he is a quality player hope he comes to Utd.

Although I can understand what Chelski did, they made him an offer he wanted more then after a while the retracted it. I like the fact they they stood up to the fact they thought he was worth a certain amount and would not go above it.

TBH with the amount of injury time he has had in the recent times I am suprised he didn`t take it. If rumours are correct and he snubbed 85K as he wanted 100 not sure what clubs would pay that much, Spurs would, is that not above Arsenals wage cap? Not sure Utd would fork out that much p/w for him. Although the free transfer could tempt more clubs to part with a higher wage.

Most definitely a potentially massive mistake, but I can also see the clubs point of view.

My understanding is that £100k per week contract has been on the table for a while and Joe Cole wanted parity £120,000 to give him parity with Lampard, Terry and Drogba who are on about £130-140k per week.

I can see Chelsea being reluctant to do this, given the fact that he has had a few major injuries in the past couple of seasons and they have stood by him.

Will be interesting where he goes to as it is obviously a done deal, but by the laws he`s not actually allowed to speak to any English clubs until 1 July 2010 when his contract expires, whereas if he was going abroad he could have signed 6months before this date.

Hope Utd get him, but got a feeling could be City, Arsenal or Liverpool (Liverpool being the least likely in my opinion, because of manager change and the £120,000wages required).

.

I was of the opinion that Spurs stuck to a fairly rigid salary structure also - and that £100k would not fall into that structure

I would have liked him at Liverpool years ago, still would, but last year probably blew us out of the running (unless we get a manager quickly who can sweet talk him lol)

Thought I heard the other day that the Pool had the 2nd or 3rd highest wage bill in the league

If a player left Chelsea because they weren`t getting paid enough, they certainly won`t end up at Arsenal, that`s for sure. A certain other Cole went the other way for the same reasons.

Another reason he wouldn`t end up at Arsenal is he just isn`t good enough.

Now Chelsea losing Drogba over a pay issue, that would be much more of a loss for the side I suspect.

Liverpool probably do, but the fact you earn considerably less than competitors, don`t have Champions Leauge football next season, have financial concerns with regards to funding (wouldn`t go as far as troubles) and also the fact that I believe that Gerrard

Not for me, a maximum of 7 games can be played at a World Cup and the fact that players can have bad form.

Or for example players like Steven Gerrard never really made any kind of impact at International level and was still a good player after the last World Cup.

Ronaldo and Messi both never perform aswell for their countries as they do for their clubs and wouldn`t shock me if both go out in the group stages without having scoring a goal (not that I think they will, but it just won`t "shock" me).

I haven`t even bothered watching the friendlies, but apparently he`s been the only player to perform, and was good for Chelsea on the back end of the season.

He`s pretty much guaranteed starter for USA game at least.

With Barry not playing in that game, then it`s going to be Gerrard and Lampard in the middle.  That only leaves Milner, Wright-Phillips, Lennon and Joe Cole for the wing slots.

Lennon and Cole are expected to get the nod.

You`ve got to be kidding?

Over the last 6 years or so i`d say he`s been one of England`s better players.
He`s about the only one who consistantly takes on players and asks questions of defenders.
He also adds some proper shape to the England team

He regularly chipped in with goals for Chelsea and again I dont think he`s been that inconsistent for them (you have to remember this season he had the end of the injury and then was in and out of the team under Ancelotti which is hardly key for performing well - see Ryan Babel and most other Liverpool players under Benitez)

I`ll be shocked if he doesnt start and I think he could be a key player for us
