Well had the pleasure of attending this match last night, I nearly cancelled when I saw it was on ITV 4 but am glad i went. This was a testimonial match for John Kennedy, a talented young man whos career was cut short due to a scandelous tackle in his Scotland debut from which he never recovered, the fact that he wasnt one of the big name players who got top wages for 10 + years says a lot for him in that he handed all the proceeds to the african appeal last night.
Now the match itself, what an incredible atmosphere, I honestly dont think that any other club side could produce that for what was a mickey mouse game with assorted senior players and celebrities. I have been to Scotland England games, Rangers Celtic, Celtic European nights including Man U, Juve, Barca et al and this incredibly matched them all, no clue what was going on last night but the people had such an amazing night, The fact that one of our all time best players made a triumpant return was icing on the cake and Larsson looked like he could still get a game for a top club. The roar when he scored his hattrick was incredible and I the celebrities looked shell shocked at the ground last night and I would be amazed if it was as memorable a night as most have had. In a time of continued unrest, economic hardship it says everything for our club that we could get 54,000 people turning up midweek to put their hands in their pockets to help people who have nothing (although that is what we were founded for, just to feed a different section of the community) I have never ever been prouder of being a Celtic fan than last night. I would be interested to hear from any of you that saw the match on tv last night.
Proud to be a Hoop
Was there myself mate and let`s just say that Andrew Kerins (Brother Walfrid) and his co-founders of our fine club would be delighted that a club they set up to over a century ago to feed Glasgow`s impoverished, managed to achieve last nights remarkable fundraiser. I has been said before mbilko but Celtic like a small number of other clubs are "more than just a football club". 54k paying to watch Gerard Butler, Larsson and Ralf Little could not be done by many clubs. John Kennedy deserves huge applause also for handing over his testimonial money. Most clubs would be delighted to get that kind of support once in a lifetime. The atmosphere was electric - reminded me of a European night tbh.
ps Jeff Brazier looked not too bad a player. Was gonna pass his name to Mr McCoist lol
I didn`t watch it (as didn`t even know it was on in fairness), only heard about it this morning when my brother mentioned it.
In fairness though I generally don`t watch friendly matches anyway (apart from the charity shield).
Fair play to John Kennedy giving the money away though, I know it`s a standard thing for a lot of footballers who`ve cleaned up over the years, but obviously he hasn`t earned anywhere near those kind of amounts.
