Magic Johnson: Always Showtime
Earvin 'Magic' Johnson is one of the NBA's greatest ever players. His time with the LA Lakers garnered him five NBA titles, three NBA MVP of the year awards a feat that only three other players have accomplished. His fast paced playing style, buzzer-beating shots that have secured games and wonderful passes made him a wonder on the court.
The documentary, narrated by Danny Glover, charts Johnson's life from a young kid practicing in the backyard through to a high school and college wunderkind and then one of the NBA's all time greats. It covers his rivalry with Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics, his worldwide recognition that his success created and his many wonderful memories throughout his time. One thing that is glossed over, is his retirement in 1991 due to discovering he had contracted HIV and his return to basketball first as a member of the 1992 Olympic winning 'Dream Team' and then to the Lakers in 1996.
At just over an hour in length, you wonder if this is enough time to cover the career of a basketball legend like Magic Johnson. The lack of extras is also shocking as it is pretty difficult to recommend a DVD to someone when all it has is a short documentary and no additional game footage, interviews or extras. However, for fans of Johnson, or basketball in general, this is a great taster of just how good he was.
