It was a time of war and heroes...

Introduction

Who?

No, I'd never heard of him either. American comic & actor Pablo Francisco seems to be best known for his voices on Family Guy & The Simpsons. His "Movie Previews guy" clip is the most viewed comedy clip on YouTube, according to Chortle.

So he does some stand up, some impressions, some comedy voices, comedy sound effects and his "movie previews guy" routine (featuring a film about Arnold Schwarzenegger as a street tortilla seller).

Video and Audio

A nothing to complain about widescreen transfer, and a similar DD2.0 stereo soundtrack.

Extra Features

The most substantial extra should be the commentary track, but it's not all that exciting. Francisco tends to just do the jokes just before they are coming up in the show. He does occasionally tell an interesting story about one of the on-stage stories, but the track really needed someone else there to ask questions or steer it along.

"Inside the Comic's studio" is a 3 minute interview piece and Holy frijoles is an oddment - 90 seconds of footage of a plate of beans and rice that reveals a religious image and then covers it up again...

Conclusion

Another American comedian who hasn't travelled so well. Much of this material has very little relevance to a British audience. The comedy voiceover man is probably the only thing that really works, but it's also not all that original. It's an easy target, and many people will already have their own similar routines. My own voiceover routine starts with "It was a time of war and heroes..."

He's quite talented at making different sound effects, but didn't that go out with Michael Winslow's Larvell Jones in the Police Academy films? I don't want to appear snobbish but there's just nothing interesting about the material here. Mocking lap dancers? Mocking Mexicans and their choice of radio stations? American audiences seem to lap this stuff up, but for me it was tired and lame. There's just so much comedy out there that's so much better.

One to avoid I'm afraid.
