Synopsis:
1980: A film journalist Riyaz (Rajit Kapur) is on the search for a lost film reel. On that film reel lies the only moving image of his mother, who he never got to know since she passed away when he was young. His mother is named Zubeidaa (Karishma Kapoor). While on the search for the lost reel, he encounters many people who knew Zubeidaa, and begins to understand his mother more then he ever could.

1952: Zubeidaa was the only daughter of rich film producer Suleman Seth (Amrish Puri). However her father was a very strict conservative Muslim, and followed the closed and rich Indian society lifestyle that was lived. This meant a free spirit like Zubeidaa, could never fly to her own demands. She wasn’t allowed to be creative and was forced to marry a man she never loved. Ultimately even her father forced her to divorce after a dispute between both fathers in laws. Now a single mother with a baby Zubeidaa is lost on what to do.

Her only friend Rose introduces her to Maharaja Vijayrendra Singh (Manoj Bajpai), a keen polo player. Both the king and Zubeidaa fall in love and a new ray of light and hope dawns upon the two. Vijayrendra Singh is already married to Princess Mandita Devi (Rekha), a match made by their two royal families as part of their traditions. However he marries Zubeidaa for love and brings her to his castle. There he lives with both his wives. However with the social change on India’s forthcoming independence and societies narrow-minded outlook on life, Zubeidaa has new obstacles to overcome with her Maharaja.

Riyaz then begins to learn of Zubeidaa’s plight as she pines for her Maharaja’s love, and how it changes her and the circumstances she is in.
