RE: AVG (free) Anti-Virus oftware

It let bugbear run rampant on my friend`s system.

I use McAfee - works fine for £15 :)

New player around the £300 mark?

OK - since nobody can help me with my NAD problem I`m in the market for a new player.

What would people recommend for around the £300 mark?

I don`t care where I buy it from, I`m quite happy to go the mail-order or Richer Sounds route to get a better unit for the money.

My main concern is good audio and picture quality.
I don`t need it to play many formats - just CD`s and DVD`s.

I want it to do DVD`s very well indeed though - picture and sound quality are paramount - I couldn`t care less about `features`.

I have a 28" widescreen JVC TV in case anybody knows of compatibility issues with some players (although the TV seems fine with everything I throw at it).

Cheers =)

NAD T550 problem

Hi there,

I`ve been suffering for over a year now with sync problems on this player (purchased from Richer Sounds). Quite often the sound and picture will play out of sync with each other - they seem to gradually slip as the movie proceeds.

It seems ok on some discs and can sometimes be resolved by pausing the movie and re-starting it.

A NAD tech told me that this issue was something to do with the way discs were encoded and could be solved with a firmware upgrade. The problem is, because I bought the player from a dealer outside of NAD`s fascist regime I doubt they will do the firmware upgrade for me :^(

Does anybody know somewhere I could download this update from and install it myself. I`ve searched the web for hours to no avail...

If I can`t do that I`m going to have to try and sell the player and get another.
The trouble is that, apart form the above mentioned problem, the picture and sound quality are absolutely excellent. It would just be nice if they were excellent in tandem!

Does anybody have any recommendations for a player that is as good, picture and sound-wise, and that doesn`t have any `issues`.

I would go for another NAD - but I`ve been put off by this experience.

Thanks...

Digital out going to hi-fi DAC

Hi there,

I was wondering what would happen if I plugged one of a DVD`s digital outputs into my Cambridge DACmagic2 (which has both optical and coaxial inputs).

Many things I have read say that DTS etc come out of these inputs - however, all I want is bog-standard stereo as I doubt my old DAC will handle these new-fangled surround systems ;-)

Is it possible to get a `normal` stereo output out of a DVD`s digital output at all?

I don`t actually have a DVD yet (see my previous thread) but I am looking at either the Toshiba SD210EB or NADT550 (which I have found a good deal for).

RE: Best player for under £300

Thanks very much - just checked out a review of this machine in DVD buyer and it does look excellent.

Apparently it`s multi-region out-of the box too :)

Cheers,
Andy

Best player for under £300

Hi all - I`m new to this DVD malarky and am considering my 1st player.

I have a 28" JVC Flatscreen TV and Quad77 hi-fi amp to plug the machine into.
I also have a Cambridge DACmagic][ to plug any digital audio into.

My priorities are sound and picture quality.
Optical output (for sound) would be nice (This would enable me to plug the the player into my DAC).
I`m not bothered about surround sound - good quality stereo is my priority.
Multi-region would be nice - but not essential.
MP3 playback would be nice - but not essential.

As I say - my budget is around £300.

Many thanks for your time - It`s very confusing buying your first DVD player!
