One For All 6 remote - works for NTL Pace digibox - £10 cheaper than Maplin!

Hi, I was just about to buy the Maplin LCD Panel Remote, but no local or mail order branch had one plus the group`s warning re. irda on Pace Cable boxes put me off.
I can confirm that the one for all 6 contols the Pace box fine as I`ve just installed it!
Buy the remote from Argos for £29.79, call up the helpline (open until 1900) and tell them what equip you`d like it to control, they then update the inbuilt codes by acoustic link download on your phone and talk you through installation.
I had my NTL bix, Thomson VCR, Yamaha receiver and Dansai DVD all controlled and running 5 mins later.
Oh it has a learning function and PC RS232 link too - seems a bit of a bargain.
Best of luck

Is DTS vital on a Dolby Digital AV Receiver?

Hi, I`m looking to upgrade from a (Richer Sounds) Sherwood ProLogic AV Amp to complement a new Dansai DVD player.
There seems to be a great deal currently on discontinued Yamaha RXV 396 RDS Dolby Digital Receivers.
- The problem seems to be that they are Dolby 5.1 only, and don`t decode DTS (although have 6 channel input).
I have a few region 1 DVDs, but they all seem to have dual Dolby Digital in addition to DTS soundtracks, but I believe R1 DVDs mostly favour DTS soley
So, is DTS vital, can you live without it these days, or is it a false economy to do without in view of the ease of getting cheaper R1 DVDs?
Any advice gratefully received!

RE: Does anyone know of VCRs that aren`t affected by macrovision?

Thomson now own Ferguson and build from similar chassis.
I can confirm that certain models ignore the MV signal.
Mine even records in NTSC from an NTSC signal - and plays it back on a PAL TV (mono sound only).
ARGOS had an amazing offer on a NICAM Thomson VCR, maybe it is stil on?
Hope this helps

DANSAI 852 DVD Player - Can picture / sound be adjusted?

Hi, thanks to the kind members of this forum, I purchased a dansai and it is indeed very compatible, versitile and seems an ideal first player.

1. The difference between RGB and Compsite Video is VERY noticible. The Composite is very warm or `over-orange`, maybe more obvious as RGB is cool or blue?
- I don`t want to adjust the TV`s settings as they are just right for its tuner and my Thomson VCR, so can any changes be made to the Dansai`s output?

2. Can any mods be made to the sound output other than Volume (eg the 3D effects some similar players have?)

3. The TV is an oldish 32" Sony 4:3 Trinitron, but it does have an RGB SCART. On the Dansai, I`ve set TV type to PAL & Normal/PS, but all the DVD movies I`ve tried play at Letterbox rather than FullScreen! Special features etc., do play at Full Screen however.
- Is there some other setting you`ve got to make to get movies to play Full Screen?

4. Does any one have any other tips or tricks for the Dansai / Entry Level players?

Thanks for reading these Newbie questions - all advice gratefully received.

Scart Leads - Do expensive leads make a difference to cheap ones?

Hi, I put this question to a digital design engineer friend and he replied that the only difference a more expensive cable would make is that if it was coax (cheap one probably are not) the impedance would be spot-on at 75 Ohms and not overload the device drivers with a direct connection that could go up to 200+ Ohms. This would appear as distortion to the right of the screen. If you don`t see this distortion, then a cable upgrade would make little difference.
He puts `oxygen-free` copper cable, etc, in the same league as gold plated mains plugs - ie. `Hi Fi Magic`!

Has anyone noticed significant improvements with better cables than the cheap ones supplied with units, and if so what cables are best?
