Scart Leads - Do expensive leads make a difference to cheap ones?

Digiteer (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 20th January 2002, 01:31

Hi, I put this question to a digital design engineer friend and he replied that the only difference a more expensive cable would make is that if it was coax (cheap one probably are not) the impedance would be spot-on at 75 Ohms and not overload the device drivers with a direct connection that could go up to 200+ Ohms. This would appear as distortion to the right of the screen. If you don`t see this distortion, then a cable upgrade would make little difference.
He puts `oxygen-free` copper cable, etc, in the same league as gold plated mains plugs - ie. `Hi Fi Magic`!

Has anyone noticed significant improvements with better cables than the cheap ones supplied with units, and if so what cables are best?

Regards
Malc

I wasn`t sure, but I bought a new 32" widescreen tv and paid over £1,500, but found with my normal scart leads, the picture was a bit fuzzy. I thought I may as well try it and spent over £80 on s-video, scart etc and noticed a massive improvement. Best thing I did. The cables were IXOS.

I bought a b-tech ribbon scart lead from www.beyondhifi.net for about £18 including postage and vat. The difference in picture was clearly a huge improvement and I only have a crappy 28" amstrad tv.
Plus I ordered it on the friday and it arrived on saturday morning!!

yes i have a philips 28 widescreen tv. pace digi box jvc svhs. the free cables with the video were ok. but when i bought some lektropacks silver series you could really see the differance also on the cheap ones i noticed shadows and the colour keep changing once i used the new ones it was all ok.. the silver series are double shielded which does stop interference. if my wife notices the difference they must work. the picture is much clearer, colourfull with more defination, and all so the sound is way better more bass and higher treble. it is like buying good speaker cable . it works

Deffinately, I too just purchased a £60 Ixos SCART and all my gripes about picture quality went away.
