I`ve just tested it on my r2 version and it works. It works if you go on any language and press left. You are on the Matrix revisited disc and not the disc with the film on it? I know it sounds stupid but that might be your problem.

I`ve got R2 of T2 and its there. its not a whole new version of the film. just the two deleted scenes which can be accessed through the discs normal menus. not really an easter egg.

are the vcds on cdr? My dvd player doesn`t recognise cdr for some bizzare reason, sez so on the box too.

I don`t know if this`ll work as i don`t have a reion 1 dvd to test it. In the diag menu, there is an option to automatically configure the drive. When you go in this menu, there are options to configure DVD-DL (dual layer) and DVD-SL (single layer) as well as cds. I`m wondering, if you insert a region 1 dvd in the drive to configure it, does it set the player to region 1? To get into the diag menu, put the player in standby with no disc in, then press title, then clear, then power. I have a DVP-S336 by the way.
