RE: Mico r311 vs sonel macromaster!!!!

it works fine from vhs, it`s just flickering with dvd
I also have a Sonel Macromaster, with the same results.
The problem is that while VHS videos are protected by Macrovision (an alalogue system), most DVDs are protected by a different, more complex, digital / analogue encryption involving watermarks. Part of the encryption is on the disk, and part is generated by the DVD player that is playing the disk. This means that the recording device (your Mico) "knows" it is being asked to record a copyright source. Some early DVD players - mainly chinese manufacture - did not include the CSS system. However international law now enforces that all manufacturers include the system as part of the liecense deal to use the current DVD technologies.
Earlier DVDs which were only protected by Macrovision will be copiable
RE: MICO Espejo R311. DVD Recorder. I have one. First thoughts.
Incidently, I had to return an E50 that didn`t work out of the box, and the replacement unit was noisy in operation (suprising for Panasonic equipment), but I don`t blame -R / RAM

The problems with the R311 have nothing to do with +R +RW format.
1) The manual has some errors in it, resulting in users connecting to the wrong scart sockets.
2) The Mico does not appear to be built to the sort of quality standards consumers expect.
3) Users expect perfect pictures when they connect with damp string and chewing gum.
+R +RW has a greater future expansion potential than -R -RW (which is why a lot of the manufacturers, or their parent/subsiduary companies, have a foot in both camps).
The primary restriction often quoted is the "serial" recording mode. Well that is no different to a vcr. If you want to do complex editing then a ram/pc based sytem is what you need. It`s a question of horses for courses. Don`t forget that for years the broadcast industry has recorded in serial mode, then edited via computer systems and software (eg Avid) then saved the final result as a serial recording.
The R311, when connected correctly, is basically a vcr with higher picture quality. It does not pretend to be anything else.

My remote works ok, but is a bit sensitive to reflections from sunlight/room lighting.
I have noticed that if I pause during a recording on DVD+R then recommence, the quality of picture deteriorates quite badly - grainy & flare. If I Stop, then Start, the quality remains the same (ie very good). Anyone else come across this?

I only use Verbatin DVD +R and Phillips DVD +RW in my R311, both giving excellent results

Unfortunately it is not an automatic switch box. I bought it some years ago from Maplin electronics.
The time is right for someone to market a switch box that works off a remote, I`m wearing the carpet out.
note Phillips DVD+RW disks in packs of 3 for £9.99 at Sainsburys. Do not buy the 5 packs, they cost £19.99.

George,
Refund is not at the discretion of the manager. The Sale of Goods Act is very clear. The retailer is responsible for either replacement or refund of faulty goods, and then it is up to them to resolve their costs with the wholesaler/manufacturer. If they dig their heels in, threaten to report them to your local trading standards officer. It will be cheaper for them to refund you than to have to action a complaint by the TSO.

I currently use Verbatim disks and they play back ok on my Samsung S224.
I read the manual, connected the Mico up, and it worked straight away with no problems.
I use a three way scart switch box and fully connected scart leads. The connections are: Mico to input A, a Panasonic vcr to input B, and a Samsung S224 DVD to input C. This allows recording B to A, and C to A. The box gives me two sets of phono audio and video outs, one is the tv, the other is the currently selected input device.
For arial connections, I use a three way rf amplifier, giving direct feeds to the Mico, the VCR, and the TV.
So far I have not had any problems with recordings, playback, or compatability.
