Portable DVD - HELP !

I wonder if anyone can help. I`m in Hong Kong at the moment, and there are some incredibly good deals on portabel DVD players. All the shop owners claim that all Hong Kong DVD players are region free.

BUT - some of the portable players cannot play PAL discs as the screens do not support it.

I`ve had loads of conflicting advice, as some just want to make a sale, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows for sure.

My impression at the moment is that the new Sony FX-DV will play PAL and NTSC discs and I`ve been told that all SHARP portables will also.

Can anyone give me any advice ? It`d be most appreciated.

Cheers

RE: My two pence worth in support of SCAN...

"I would also say the, Encore, Medion, Himage, , ect....
are all better then scans, and two of those cost around a £100.00"

Because of course Bear you`ve seen all these machines in action. Wait, you own a DVD shop, you`ve bought every single machine that`s on the market today, installed 200 TV`s and hooked up a different player to each one, and then simultaneosly watched the same disc on every player.

I very much doubt it - hence you`re talking out of yor arse.

Personally I couldn`t give a flying f*ck which player is better - my SCAN cost a paltry 175 quid, and it does exactly what it says on the tin and does it well. I`m not slagging the major manufacturers, but personally I wanted the ability to play MP3`s. There are no BIG name players that do this at present.

The SCAN does it beautifully, and also plays everything I chuck at it with crystal clear picture quality. And Mr Bear it did straight out of the box, with no firmware revisions.

DVD is still in it`s infancy, and personally I`m glad that I`ve not layed out a stack of cash for a player, because when Phony release the latest super duper DVD 200000000000 that plays DVD, VCD`s MP3`s, 8 track cartridges, and gives you a hand job, I`ll be able to consign the SCAN to my bedroom and get said wonder machine.

But for now ? The SCAN does everything I want, and it didn`t break the bank.

Enjoy your Sony Bear. You made your decision and more power to you. If you`re happy with it then shut the f*ck up and enjoy it. And don`t worry, one day you`ll get some friends and a girlfriend, and you`ll wonder why you ever spent so much time sat in front of your PC typing meaningless s***e onto this forum.

My two pence worth in support of SCAN...

I just wanted to add my comments to the whole "Is the SCAN SC-2000 any good" debate. It seems there`s an awful lot of label snobs on this forum, who seem to think that just because a bit of kit doesn`t have the words "sony" or "toshiba" on it that it must be crap.

And do they base these assumptions on the fact that they`ve actually seen the SCAN in action ? I think not. They come to this conclusion from reading the SCAN problem posts on this forum.

This is incredibly narrow minded. Of course the majority of the posts regarding the SCAN are going to be negative. Most people who are happy with their player, won`t bother writing because why should they ?

The sad anoraks who get into the old "My player`s better than your player" thing, really need to get themselves lives.

I got my SCAN off my girlfriend for Christmas, and I have to say that it`s been superb. I`ve not upgraded the firmware from version 1.87 as it`s behaving itself perfectly well as it is. I have loads of R1 and R2 DVD`s and I`ve not seen a single glitch on any of them.

Also, as I spend all of my working week in hotels, it comes with me, and so far has been robust enough to withstand the knocks of traveling.

So I guess the point is that people shouldn`t be put off by some of the negative comments on this site. I`ll admit, I had a sinking feeling when I first found this site as I knew that my girlfriend had already ordered my player, but it all came good in the end.

For 175 quid I don`t think you can go wrong.

RE: Holding out for SCAN SC-2000

Thanks Nilesh - I thought that might be the case. A couple of people have said on this forum that the SC-2000`s from the new batch are great, so I`m really looking forward to getting it out of the box.

The missus won`t let me have it until Christmas though, so I`ve got a bit of a wait !!

Thanks for the reply.

Holding out for SCAN SC-2000

My girlfriend bought me a DVD player for Christmas, and because all the reviews were so good, I told her to get me the SCAN SC-2000.

Then I bought DVD Review Magazine, and they totally slaughtered the machine in their review.

What I`d like to know is how the same player can receive exemplary reviews in a number of other magazines - even getting Editor`s Choice in one magazine, and yet get a pasting in another one.

If you`re buying a DVD mail order, all you can do is rely on the reviews presented in the various magazines available. When these reviews are so different, it can be very confusing.

I have to say that my girlfriend ordered my player on Friday, and it arrived in Wales today (Monday). So not a bad start so far. I also find it very encouraging that the director of Scan takes the time to address the concerns voiced via this forum.

Of course the proof in the pudding is in the playing, and I won`t know that until I tear the wrapping paper off on Chrimbo day !! So I`d be intrigued to know how other people find the player - especially in its latest firmware incarnation...
