RE: MacBook owners...

According to some places I`ve spoken to (Apple, Dell) the battery isn`t covered by a 12 month warranty, as it`s thought of as a consumable.

My 13" black macbook battery has recently packed in, but as it was manufactured between the dates shown on the following support page (see ) I`m taking it back to an authorised reseller to get a new one.

RE: Free £5 Paypal Voucher for Your Ebay Postage

found out myself that it didn`t work on my account, luckily the postage wasn`t massively excessive, so just paid it anyway.

really need to remember to use a c/c with paypal >:(

RE: Cheap prescription glasses

I thought these were the guys that specsavers used to supply some glasses?

Not used them myself, but have heard good things

Just to keep everyone updated, my paypal dispute ended in the same way, have just been into my bank, and have been told because I use a debit card with my paypal account, that I`ve got slim to no chance of recovering the money through them :( grrr

RE: Utorrent/ Port Forwarding problem

Last time I had problems it was because DHCP had changed the IP I was receiving, so all the forwards were to an IP I wasn`t using. Are you sure yours is still static?

Did you make it "static" on the PC, or simply specify which address DHCP returns to you?

RE: External hard-drive advice

Is the link correct that the freecom is £110?

Try http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131331 instead.

I`ve got a case that`s similar to the Aldi drive, case really isn`t up to much. I know someone with a Freecom drive (160GB) and the case has put up with a fair amount of punisment.

RE: Core 2 Duo PC Bargain (I think)

not that I suggest it, but it`s always possible to use another copy of the disk like you said, however you could just use a linux distro? There are a lot of programs out that let a linux installation act like a media centre, see here or a more simplistic solution, see here instead!

RE: Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP (pink) £34.99 + delivery

thx to the op,

imho - I`d go for the micro (see other thread in bargain buckets)

although this gameboy still remains a good buy if interested in keeping kids quiet on long journeys!
may be worthwhile for younger kids that can`t get to grips with the micro due to its size!

RE: Does anyone play an online game called Counterstrike?

pwned.nl has been around for yeaaaaaaaaars!

I don`t know, you still see people mentioning pwned.nl quite a bit online, both in Counter Strike 1.6 and the newer Source version.

People do obsess, but if you`ve ever played its the same with everything online, you cant play without someone insulting someone else calling them a `noob`
It`s just taken in counterstrike that this happens, I`ve heard some horror stories about other online games and how serious people get (someone offshore was murdered over an item being borrowed ingame and never returned!)

see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeroy_Jenkins

probably a bit more famous than the subject of pwned.nl (mainly because a lot of counterstrike players are exactly the same, but just don`t own up to it)

:D it`s all a bit of fun

RE: dvd upscaling players advce please...

purchased a "sumvision" player off ebuyer that upscales (to 1080i), must admit the SCART output compared to HDMI connection (so normal playback vs. upscaled) is noticeable!

bargain imo!

(update, player now seems to have been removed from ebuyer, was £35)

they do have another sumvision player for £45, and for an upscaler with DVD playback I can`t complain about the one I purchased :D

RE: PS1 games on PSP via PS3 ?

for playing PS1 games, i`d suggest a custom firmware *cough* http://www.psp-hacks.com/ *cough*

That way you can make ISO`s of your games from the original disks using your PC, then play them on your PSP without the need for the PS3

The compatibility isn`t perfect with this method, but then again neither is it with regards to the PS3 method.

All the custom firmware does is uses the same method the PS3 does, but allows you to use ISO`s that you have obtained yourself.

If you haven`t already, now is the time to buy a 4gb memory stick!

:D

just to update, now shown as unavailable :(

RE: Refurbished 40GB FreeView Set Top Box Digital Twin Tuner Video Recorder £38.76 + delivery

i`ve had a look around and there`s firmware updates a plenty (some giving the features of the FVRT200?), with different themes for the program guide.

should be fun to tinker with if nothing else!

just to update, item arrived yesterday.

menu system seems much cleaner than the other set top boxes that I`ve used, will probably start tinkering around with the HDD`s this evening!
item came boxed well, delivery was swift (2-3 day serviced used, delivered next day)

so far, would recommend

RE: uTorrent using all my memory?

I must admit the explaination in the first post does lead me to think it`s the internet connection speed that`s a problem.
Happens to me too, it makes sense if you`re downloading a decent torrent that`s coming in at a high speed, that anything else using the connection will be slow.

If it`s actually slowing your machine down (showing high memory usage in say, task manager) then I`d suggest trying the latest utorrent, as it`s perfectly possible its a memory leak or something that`s present in an older version

RE: `svchost.exe` Missing.

might not be viable, but if I were stuck with it, would either boot up using a linux live disk (ubuntu is one of the best at the moment for hardware recognition), then copy the svchost`s file from a working windows machine.

failing that, take the HDD out and use a caddy to connect it up to a working machine, and copy it over. You could also use this opportunity to scan the system with a decent antivirus (AVG Free being my personal fave)

good luck!

edit - both of the above options also gives you the opportunity to copy anything you need off the machine before a dreaded reinstall!

RE: GENERAL APPLE MAC QUESTION...

i haven`t used bootcamp personally, althought I have heard good things.

try looking at download.onmac.net, has two useful options on, bootcamp and winxponmac (a zip with a readme and certain files to copy over to a new xp disk, best to read about this from the zip rather than me explain it, you may or may not want to use this)

i personally used a program called "refit" to dual boot into osx/linux, works well as its a simple install, gives a GUI on startup, where you can tell it to boot osx/windows/linux or CD, picks up various partitions automatically (for me anyway)

I found it easier to play around with the partitions, and keep a standard OSX install until I got it right. Removes the frustration of reinstalling when you totally bugger a partition up :D

edit - forgot to mention Wine (windows emulator) or Crossover

Wine is free for download, and allows some XP programs to run on OSX/Linux.
Crossover is a software based on Wine, but with support offered

I use Crossover, works well for specific programs, however if you want XP then I`d go with the bootcamp route!

good luck

RE: Do you charge or buy new batteries for your Wii remotes?

i just went for some rechargeable AA`s, with a high power rating (2700mAh) so they need charging less!

can also use the charger for other batteries unlike the docking station, but really depends if you need it

RE: Refurbished 40GB FreeView Set Top Box Digital Twin Tuner Video Recorder £38.76 + delivery

cheers, ordered one yesterday!

for me the twin tuners is worth more, as the hard drives look incredibly easy to replace (and upgrade) in these models!

RE: Virgin PS2, New Memory Card, New HDD & HD Advance.

Hi,
I`m a bit rusty, its been months since I`ve used HDAdvance and the last one I had I sold (my personal opinion, SwapMagic takes more time to use, but much easier in the end!)

First off, what version PS2 are you using, slimline or chunky? I`ll assume chunky, otherwise things get very very difficult.

The best thing I can do is point you towards this site for the time being http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=articles

This site has multiple methods of carrying out what you want to do, either via using a PS1 disk exploit (best tutorial is titled "How to Make an Independence Exploit Installer CD" or copying the files to run to the HDD (titled "Installing Exploit via Network with Original HDL/HDA Discs") I`d assume copying files to the HDD would be the easiest method by the sound of things.

Any questions PM me or ask again here, I`ll try to help as much as I can.
