Just saw an advert on TV, in this saturdays Daily Mirror, there will be a free DVD of Cabaret starring Liza Minelli. This is part of an ongoing offer in the paper with future titles being Face/off, Muriels Wedding, Enemy Of The State and a couple of others i didn`t spot the titles of, i suspect you may have to collect coupons for these future titles as i can`t see them giving away free DVDs too often.

Like the film and will add this to my other free DVDs - Ipcress File and Brief encounter and Carry on Doctor... Years ago the independent gave me a free copy of the Grifters on video... I wish they`d do the same with the DVD now

IT is, quite simply, one of the best musicals of all time. Before Cabaret hit the cinema screens in 1972 everyone thought the musical was dead in the water.

Yet the explosive combination of Liza Minnelli, choreographer Bob Fosse and the wonderful music of Kander and Ebb changed all that.

The tale of decadence, hope and despair in Berlin as the Nazi regime rises to power made Minnelli a worldwide icon and allowed her to shake off the shadow of her mother Judy Garland.

She is Sally Bowles, a singer in Berlin`s Kit Club. Dressed in stockings and suspenders she sits astride a chair to sing Mein Herr and shimmers and shimmies to the passionate hymn to materialism, Money.

She dreams of making it big and uses the club, and the men in her life, as a springboard.

In walks uptight Brian (Michael York) an Englishman lost in Berlin, looking for lodgings.

Sally takes him in and tries to drag him to bed, saying: "The only thing you can do with virgins like that is pounce!" And pounce she does.

After ravaging the effeminate Brian she moves on to rich German aristocrat Maximilian. But outside of their complicated menages a trois, the Nazi party begins to rise out of the ashes of the Weimar Republic.

In a chilling moment an angelic Aryan boy sings Tomorrow Belongs To Me, joined by a gang of brownshirts. For a moment, the trio are forced out of their bubble to face the harsh realities.

"I`m going to be a great film star... that is, if booze and sex don`t get me first," says Sally.

Thirty one years later and the statement seems more than a little prophetic after Minnelli`s long battles with addiction and her four husbands.

But Cabaret stands testament to her towering talent. Every moment she is on screen is pure electricity. By turns she is weak and vulnerable then on stage she is powerful and controlling.

She rightly scooped one of the eight Oscars handed to the film. Joel Grey, too, got one for his delightfully leering MC at the club.

This is a musical for those who hate musicals because nobody breaks into unpredictable song for no particular reason.

Fosse, who also directed the movie, agreed: "I get angsty watching musicals in which people are singing as they walk down the street or hang out the laundry... in fact I think it looks silly."

This is a pure delight of a film - a treat that can be savoured again thanks to this free DVD.

Now digitally remastered, the picture is sharper and brighter than ever before. And the songs are in glorious Dolby Digital stereo.

Nice idea but, if you look on www.melonfarmers.co.uk you`ll see that the BBFC have agreed that the Mirror may be encouraging newsagents to break the law here.

Cabaret has a 15 certificate, which make it an offence to supply it to anyone under 15.
Given that many (most ?) newspapers are delivered by kids under 15, any newsagent which gives a copy of the paper containing the DVD to such a child is breaking the law.

Can anyone shed any light on how the DVD was distributed ? Did anyone have it delivered by their paper boy/girl ?

Given that I believe the Video Recordings Act is due for a big overhaul, I think that it would help if The Mirror were investigated over this.

I don`t see a problem. The newsagent is not giving the paper to the newspaper boy/girl. It`s being delivered. If a robber sends stolen goods by Royal Mail does that mean the postman/woman can be jailed for handling stolen goods?

Aha I see your point, but royal mail don`t know whats being carried. Paper shop owner does.

Have you seen inside the bulk of the papers the `paper boy` delivers?!?! I think it`s far more likely that he`s going to flick through the paper on his rounds than set up his portable DVD player and trawl through the movie... ;)

It`s a grey area that I suspect the Mirror`s already considered...

I remember delivering the sport when I was a lad and even copies of the occasional mayfair/playboy. I was only 14 :o
